Annual Israel Parade Heads Up Fifth Avenue

Elected officials and diplomats were among those marching in the Celebrate Israel Parade up Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue today June 05 2011,
Organizers said the event, which is the world’s largest celebration of the 63-year-old country, drew 30,000 participants, including local marching bands, representatives from synagogues and community groups. Thousands from across the five boroughs and as far away as Israel lined the avenue from 56th to 74th Streets to wave blue and white Israeli flags and watch the parade. Governor Andrew Cuomo, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Congressman Jerrold Nadler joined the marchers, but Congressman Anthony Weiner, who usually attends the parade, was noticeably absent.
