SOUTH AFRICA LABOUR FARM WORKERS STRIKE

Location: Cape Town, South Africa
January 9, 2013

South African police begin to clear the N1, South Africa’s major national highway, which was barricaded with rocks and burning tires during violent protests at De Doorns, South Africa, 09 January 2013, where farm workers across the Western Cape resumed their strike action. Police fired rubber bullets at protesters who threw stones at cars. Police also shut down major roads to prevent injuries. More than 50 arrests were made across the province, police spokesman Andre Traut was quoted as saying by local news agency SAPA. The strike follows labour action in the sector last year, which saw two deaths and damage to property, as seasonal workers demanded that their salary of about 65 rands (7.5 dollars) a day be doubled.
