The poll released Wednesday by Quinnipiac (KWIH’-nih-pee-ak) University says 71 percent of respondents support the mayor’s proposal to give teachers merit pay.
More than 80 percent support paying off student loans to attract good teachers and basing teacher layoffs on performance instead of seniority. More than half say it should be easier to fire teachers.
But 61 percent of voters disapprove of the mayor’s handling of the schools overall.
A spokesman says the mayor is pushing to make the schools “better and better” and has residents’ “overwhelming support.”
Quinnipiac polled 1,222 voters from Jan. 30 to Feb. 5. The margin of error is plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.
You know, public schools are what have helped to make this country free and great. The same curricullum and shared history is taught. Even though, our community sends our children to yeshivas, a strong public school education is in our joined interest. We don’t want each ethnic group teaching their own version of history. A uniform system of excellent education builds our city and nation.
