New York – City to Replace Car Towing for Tire Boots for Unpaid Tickets

    17

New York – The Bloomberg administration will likely give the go-ahead for a private company named PayLock to place new-age tire boots on any car whose owner has accumulated $350 or more of unpaid tickets.

Under the program, a city marshal will be deployed with teams of PayLock employees. The marshal will verify that a car has more than $350 in judgments, then authorize PayLock to boot it.

The scofflaw can then call a toll-free number and pay his bill immediately by credit or debit card. PayLock will give him a code to self-release the boot.

Or the driver can travel to a city payment center and pay his tickets and fees in cash, then get the release code.

A motorist who owes $355 in parking tickets, for example, will have to pay an additional $180 for Paylock’s “boot fee,” $70 for a marshal’s “execution fee,” plus a “poundage fee” of 5% of the entire bill.

In this case, that would be another $30. And, if the driver pays by credit card, he or she will be charged a small additional “convenience fee.”

Drivers would be forced to shell out nearly $300 on top of the original $355 in tickets. That’s virtually the same amount as under the current towing system — even though the city will be towing far fewer cars.

If the motorist doesn’t pay within two days, however, the booted car will then be towed, and the owner will be charged both a $180 booting fee and a $185 towing fee.

NYC stands for ‘Not Your Car’ and thus all kind of charges apply.

Finally we thought we citizens are gonna get treated a little more with humanity. A more rational way of dealing with unpaid tickets!

    But… Ooops na na
not so fast!! when we have the Billionaire Bloomberg that does NOT understand the average struggle of the NY residents

Ya it makes Sense the Boot lock cost only once and compared to a tow truck, Gas, Driver, Insurance, Pension, sick days, Vacation days, it brings in the same amount of money! Less cost! I think its a real rip off!!

I wonder if the city council can do any thing to stop it

So are they making a whole line of these boots for all the UN cars that owe millions in fines? Not in backward Bloomberg’s America.

We all know the marshalls didn’t want the city to do this because they would lose their fees- somehow, now it costs $180 to put a boot on, while before it cost the same to travel half way around the world- what a friggin scam- the marshalls are luving it- they can boot an entire block without towing make a ton more $$$. Sick!

I’m glad the city is helping business by giving them the opportunity to make money off of the “gotcha” scam

Seems like a good idea to me, you don’t have the hassle of going down to pick up the car, and the cost is about the same.

Yes, the city makes more (marginally) out of it, but when you consider that they still have to run the pounds and the towing operation, and have the marshal running around, it isn’t huge.

No, the biggest problem I have with it is the crony capitalism aspect of employing one specific private company to run these boots.

And of course New York’s insane parking laws, which are the root of the problem.

why is it that those of us who take the time and effort to park legally don’t complain? Nobody says that you always have to park in FRONT of the store you are going to. You can park a block or two away; nothing will happen if you walk a little. I’m sure all the complainers are those that double park and park in bus stops and at hydrants. Perhaps this will help you all act a little civilized.

if you get a ticket once in a blue moon, it would take forever to rack up $350, so no boot worries for normal people.

And what happens with this pretty little boot after you get the code? Nothing! No wonder they are charging so much! For every car over $350 they will need a new booty! That is absured! Every other car in NYC will have this nig yellow thing in their trunk (with some cars having 10-20!) PayLock is going make millions off of this goverment wasting theiving scheme!
    Shame on Bloomberg…

Three serious questions for all you New Yorkers who seem to hate Bloomberg more than Hitler:

    1. Why did you ever elect Bloomberg in the first place in 2001?
    2. If he was so bad, why did you re-elect him in 2005?
    3. If Bloomberg’s faults (which you all must have noticed by then) were so terrible why did you elect him for a THIRD term?

As I said earlier, these are serious questions. They are not rhetorical in their nature, and I really would like to find out how the local political situation in NYC has been allowed (by the voters) to deteriorate to such a state.

Oh, one last question, if I may, please: is there no such thing as a recall vote in New York?

I look forward to your answers. Please try to keep them honest, straightforward, and with as little bickering and in-fighting as is humanly possible.

    Thank you.

you obviously know nothing. blocking even a little bit of a pedestrian crosswalk just cost me a $165 fine in Brooklyn, and additional charges already have me over $200 in less than 60 days.
