    Jerusalem – The head of the Karlin-Stolin Hasidic dynasty received a behind-closed-doors tour of the Israel Museum, the first official visit there by a major ultra-Orthodox leader.

    Rabbi Baruch Shochat is known for his openness to art and culture, and encourages his followers to take an interest in art and archaelogy. The guided tour of the Jerusalem museum, which lasted about three hours, gave the rabbi a look at the Judaica and ethnography wings, as well as the interiors of the historic synagogues that are now housed at the museum. He also visited the Shrine of the Book, where the Dead Sea Scrolls and related archaeological finds are on display.

    Associates of the rabbi, who is a collector of Judaica in his own right, asked that museum officials not inform the media about the visit, and many leading Hasidic figures were not aware that it had taken place.

    He is not the only Chassideshe rebbe who is knowledgeable about jewish art and archeology. The Vishnitz, Gur and and Bobover all are known for having studied archeology and were expert in Judaica.

    He is a unique Rebbe, strong, private, learned, worldly, and humble. Not everyone has to be like him, but BH there is such a tzaddik in our generation.

    So is this how it works? Rebbes’ get educated by attending museums while their chassidim are indoctrinated that the Rebbes’ knowledge is all gleaned from the Torah. Why else must it be kept a secret? Why would I not think that Rebbes’ also read library books or even use the internet to get educated and at the same time forbid the masses from using these venues. Something is very wrong with this picture.

    I once took a similar tour of the museum together with a small group of my chaveirim, and the tour was led by our Rosh Yeshiva, a tremendous talmud chacham. For obvious reasons we avoided a couple of exhibits focused on the avodah zarah of the Cananim and other locals. Overall it was an incredible experience.

    It baffles my mind that a trip to a museum has to be shrouded in secrecy as if this rabbi went on a trip to a Las Vegas to experience the night life. Normally a visit to a museum shouldn’t even be a news story. Why would a visit to a museum create controversy with his followers? Is it that scandalous to expose yourself to history and arts of this world that God created? Or is this a way to discourage followers from gaining any knowledge of this world other than their version of frumkeit?

    Why do the rebbes need to fear education and culture. If they want to live like in the shtetals then use a horse and buggy like the amish, who deserve respect, these chareidim shun modernity except where it benifits them, like black lexus, stealing welfare from the government, its ok because then you can sit in kollel, and not have to have a real job, like they did in the shtetel

    he took his wife, very refreshing and should be made public, considering all the recent events.

    Maybe others can learn from him

    To # 1 as having grown up within the chasidic communities you mentioned I don’t know where you get your facts but 99% of ppl belonging to these chasidic groups don’t even understand what the word art means let alone culture & that does not make them bad people just illiterate people.

    Dear VIN readers;

    I like the way when the Karliner Rebba asks not to take pictures of him everyone takes it like he said not to release to the media 😉 which everyone knows that he doesn’t like picture regardless where he is. I don’t understand why it has to make it in the media, it’s a nice thing for a Rebba to go etc. but why plaster it all over?!

    Be well!

    People please wake up. this act of the “REBBE” will now permit his Chasiddim and maybe other Chasiddim to visit museums. A place full of impiety, blasphemy, profanity and idolatry. Please go back to your holy Torah and avoid any contact with such secularisim and modernity. PLEASE
