Manhattan borough president Scott Stringer, who has long advocated for local businesses throughout New York City, visited Kineret Florist, located on 13th Avenue and 53rd Street and bought a bouquet of roses and calla lilies for his wife Elyse l’kavod Shabbos.

As previously reported on VIN News, police have taken to the streets of Borough Park in recent weeks and have been clearing unlicensed flower sellers from the area.

“A group of twenty one florists came to us and complained that they lose thousands of dollars to the unlicensed vendors,” Yidel Perlstein, chairman of Community Board 12 told VIN News. “These vendors don’t pay taxes, they don’t pay rent and our florists have been suffering because of them. We have been working in conjunction with the police of the 66th precinct to make sure that there is no one without proper permits selling flowers on the streets of Borough Park.”

Perlstein added that he understands that many of these vendors have been doing business for years and that initially the police, who patrol the streets looking for unlicensed flower sellers every Friday, only handed out warnings to violators. Summonses were issued on following weeks to those who ignored the warnings and police have begun confiscating flowers from repeat offenders.

I am grateful to have toured 13th Avenue in Borough Park with Yidy Perlstein, Chair of Brooklyn Community Board 12. Said Borough President Scott Stringer, The retail establishments that line 13th Avenue attract customers from all corners of the city, as well as tourists from across the world. Small businesses are the backbone of New York City’s economy, and government must be responsive to their needs if we want to strengthen our middle class and encourage urban entrepreneurship . I look forward to bringing some beautiful flowers from 13th avenue home to my wife for Shabbas, Stinger added.

“It was an honor to have Borough President Stringer as a customer and I asked him to please keep up his efforts on behalf of local small businesses,” said Moishe Lichtenstadter, owner of Kineret Florist.

While I agree and feel for the local store owners this visit was just political.

Democrats have lost a lot of support amongst frum yidden and Ezra Friedlander is on the wrong side of the fence.

At 1st I thought about writing that if only stores would lower their prices

    What a bunch of bull

Most of us would never inconvenience ourselves to look for parking pay the meter and go into a store to buy flowers

Especially when you have curb side service and imagine you dont have to get out of the car.

That said, when I do buy flowers which isnt to often I go to my favorite store were the flowers will last Atleast 5 days Yup I spent $25 for a worthy cause

    Making your spouse happy

    Git shabbos

why must you drive to get flowers on 13th avenue? its a 15minute walk max from just about anywhere in boro park

I guess fewer people will be bringing flowers home to their spouses if the vendors are not out. No…we can’t all afford buying them in stores…and we still want to please and bring things L’kovod shabbos.
So as long as the prices will not come down, they won’t be seeing much of a change in business.

The florist are just trying to monopolize the business. There are many ways for vendors to legalize what they do. Some vendors may even open florists taking revenue from the existing flower shops and defeating the whole point of this peddler crackdown. 66th pct. Has a lot of better things to do. I say L’kovod shabbos.
