Jerusalem – Plesner Walks Out On Ya’alon; Tal Law Talks Breakdown

The Tal Law exempts orthodox Jewish yeshiva students from army or national service. July 02, 2012. Photo by Miriam Alster/FLASH90Jerusalem – MK Yohanan Plesner (Kadima) walked out on talks with Strategic Affairs Minister Moshe Ya’alon about a universal service bill on Wednesday, when the two sides were unable to reach agreements on key issues.

“We have reached a dead end,” Plesner said.

After Plesner and Ya’alon discussed and agreed on enlistment quotas and personal sanctions for those who do not join the IDF or do national service, the Likud minister presented a different stance in a Wednesday-afternoon meeting.

A Kadima source, while unable to specify the changes Ya’alon requested, said they would turn the bill into “a copy of the Tal Law,” which allowed haredim to indefinitely postpone service, and make it “empty of content.”

Ya’alon’s office declined to comment at this stage.

Previously, on Monday, coalition chairman Ze’ev Elkin had told reporters at the Knesset that Netanyahu would succeed in passing the proposal being drafted to equalize the burden of IDF service while keeping his 94-MK coalition intact.

United Torah Judaism had threatened to leave the coalition over the issue, and Shas had expressed similar thoughts.

They were waiting to see what would be in the final bill drafted by Strategic Affairs Minister Moshe Ya’alon and Kadima MK Yohanan Plesner, which, until the latest crisis, had been expected to be completed by Wednesday night and brought to a vote in the cabinet Sunday.

The legislation had been scheduled to have its first reading in the Knesset on Monday and its final readings by the end of the month.

“I don’t expect problems passing it,” Elkin said at the time. “UTJ and Shas are sending messages to us not to count on them leaving, because they don’t want Kadima taking their portfolios.”

“UTJ has a real case to justify leaving the coalition, because the agreement not to change the status quo on matters of religion and state has been violated – but if UTJ or Shas leave, they are making a mistake, because we will have a secular coalition,” said Elkin.

They truly want a free ride for all and every single one of their followers

Likud (Netanyahu) is trying to eat his cake and have it to. Netanyahu is talking as if he supports the drafting the Chareidim so as to keep Kadima happy, while making any change toothless in order to keep the charedim happy.

National service would be a wise move for our chareidi populace. While I believe they do serve the Jewish people through learning, there is nothing wrong and everything right with them gaining civil service and other productive work skills, higher education skills, networking, and performing soft kiruv through the relationships they create. Other countries have similar mandatory conscription (Singapore for example). It makes for better citizens, particularly in a heterogeneous society as is Israel and as is Singapore. I know the “fears” foisted on them. But in my book, what you obsess about comes about, whether kids at risk, Internet abuse, or a host of other communal ills. Let’s teach personal and communal responsibility, serving for a higher purpose, breaking down the ghettos of the mind, achdus, mesorah, and the values and practices that make Jews and Judaism truly great.

Unity and vision is required in the State of Israel right now. The camp must not split into various groups who at best will not talk with each other, and at worst who are at each other’s throats. There is a peaceful way forward on this issue. Maybe a Tent of Meeting could be organised and various representatives of all the groups can come and sit with a certain host…

Prayers for the State of Israel.

Such a pity..Issues could have been solved but lets face it. MK Yochanan Plesner went for all out war -not compromise or slow change-and was bound to fail as per the latest news. You cannot force or threaten a huge community with their ideology and way of life overnight.

lets get real for a minute. do any of you really think that the real reason the Chareidim don’t want to serve the state is because they’re learning?
the real reason is because even the Litvishe see the state of Israel as something that came into their life without invitation. we had Frum people living in Eretz Yisroel way before the creation of the State of Israel. and the reason why we have Frum MK’s in the coalition is to be able to keep the Jewish Jew haters from enacting too many laws that will turn out to hurt our values.
and that’s also the reason why we’re taking from the State every possible program and as much money as it’s possible, because if we won’t take the money then those funds will be used to advance secular or outright anti Jewish causes.
you may hate me for what I wrote, but it’s the damn truth.
we DON’T want to serve or help in anyway the State of Israel.
let us live our life as we had for hundreds of years. a fine Jewish young guy has no business carrying a gun and learning fighting techniques. if the secular population wants to act like Goyim with the ידיים ידי עשיו then let them do it themselves.

Lets be clear about the problems
Back in the “alter heim” when they took you into the Russian army for 25 years, Oy Vey. Since you probably did not come back frum or come back at all.
Serving in the army when you live in a country and are a citizen is part of life.
If you don’t want to serve then you can renounce your citizenship and move to a country that you like or likes you.
Iran, Palestine, Syria among the few that come to mind. Maybe you need some SPRING well you can go to the center of Arab Spring like Egypt. Now that’s a major center for Torah and Ahavas Yisroel.
So wake up and be a part of “normal” society.
Get a job, pay your way, do chesed which is called community service.

to others who say they are not for the Israel country is there any country that the ultra Orthodox feel part of to join an army, they always try to opt out. So please do not use the medina as an excuse they do this in every country they live in
