    UPDATE 5:18 PM Hurricane Sandy is “moving quickly” toward New Jersey and Delaware is expected to make landfall along or just south of the southern New Jersey coast within the next few hours, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said on Monday.

    The huge cyclone was 30 miles (45 km) east-southeast of Cape May, New Jersey, and about 40 miles (65 km) south of Atlantic City, New Jersey, the center said in an advisory at 5 P.M. EDT

    UPDATE 6:38 AM All major U.S. stock exchanges will remain closed with Hurricane Sandy due to make landfall on the East Coast.

    There had been plans to allow electronic trading to go forward Monday on the New York Stock Exchange, but with all mass transit shut down, getting people in and out of New York was determined to be too dangerous.

    Electronic trading will shut down 15 minutes early.

    Though it’s likely to carry little market relevance, the Dow Jones industrial futures are down 67 points to 12,987. The broader S&P futures have given up 8.10 points to 1,399.50. Nasdaq futures are down 18 points to 2,641.

    UPDATE 11:47 PM U.S. airlines canceled more than 7,000 flights to and from the Northeast corridor on Sunday. Hotels in the region were busy handling cancellations for guests who could not get to destinations in the Northeast, extending stays for guests who could not leave town, and booking rooms for people who left their homes.

    UPDATE 4:59 PM The New York Stock Exchange will close its trading floor Monday as Hurricane Sandy barrels its way up the Northeast, but Big Board trading will continue electronically.

    UPDATE 3:52 PM New York state courts in New York City and surrounding counties will be closed on Monday because of the massive storm.

    Spokesman David Bookstaver says courts in the five boroughs, as well as Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island, and Orange, Rockland, Duchess, Westchester and Putnam counties north of the city will be closed except for arraignments and emergency applications.

    Emergency applications include things like orders of protection.

    UPDATE 12:12 PM Ferry service across the East River has been shut. Service was suspended Sunday, and the suspension was expected to go through Monday. The ferry service connects locations in midtown and lower Manhattan with Queens and Brooklyn.

    UPDATE 11:41 AM Governor Andrew M. Cuomo directed the New York Army and Air National Guard to mobilize in response to Hurricane Sandy, and as a result, the Guard will deploy up to 1,175 Citizen Soldiers and Airmen. Troops are reporting to duty at their assignments.
