File - In this Oct. 18, 2011 file photograph, released Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit, right, is escorted by commander of the Hamas military wing Ahmad Jabari on the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing. Israel killed Jabari in Gaza on Wednesday in one of more than 20 airstrikes that marked the worst barrage in four years on the Palestinian territory after a new round of rocket fire hit southern Israel earlier this week. (AP Photo/Khalid Farid, File)Jerusalem – Noam Shalit, whose son Gilad was captured in 2006 in a terror raid orchestrated by Ahmed Jabari, the Hamas military commander killed by Israel on Wednesday, said Jabari “had a lot of blood on his hands” and that he hoped the ongoing IDF operation would restore quiet to southern Israel.

Killing Jabari was “a necessary step” toward bringing calm to the south of Israel, Shalit said. Ultimately, though, Shalit added, Israel would have to deal “directly or indirectly” with Hamas, since “Hamas is not going anywhere.”

Jabari organized the 2006 attack in which Hamas terrorists crossed into Israel via an underground tunnel, attacked an IDF position, killed two soldiers and dragged Shalit into Gaza, where he was held hostage for more than five years. Jabari also escorted Shalit when he was handed over to the Egyptian authorities last year, en route to Israel, as part of an exchange deal under which Israel released more than 1,000 Palestinian security prisoners.

I’m wondering if this is the first phase of something much bigger. The Iranian strategy if Israel were to strike their nuclear facilities was to unleash Hamas and Hezbollah plus sending their own air force to attack Israeli air bases and Dimona. Iran would want to tie down Israeli tactical fighters to defend the homeland, thereby assuring that the IDF can’t follow-up fully against Iran’s hardened nuclear facilities. But, if Israel takes the initiative with Iran’s puppets and eliminates or reduces those threats first, then it will have more freedom to use Israeli power in Iran. It would be an interesting strategy, even more so, if Israel had reason to believe that Jabari was briefed on Iran’s strategy and hadn’t shared the details with his lieutenants. Then taking out Jabari would effectively frustrate Iran’s plans to have an effective coordinated strategy with Hamas. That’s all 100% speculation, but you never know.
