Cuomo made the critical remarks Wednesday while helping to pass out holiday meals to Superstorm Sandy victims in Lawrence, Long Island.

According to Newsday (http://bit.ly/QaRv2e ), Cuomo also said LIPA (LY’-puh) “hasn’t worked in a long, long time.”

LIPA did not immediately respond to a comment request.

Cuomo has formed a commission to investigate the responses of utilities following the superstorm. The governor said he expects a “full report in a matter of weeks.”

    LIPA’s operations chief has resigned.

What a bunch of “public relations” hogwash!
LIPA is a NY State agency under the guidance of the governor. If LIPA isn’t working the Cuomo should point the finger at himself. By blaming LIPA he is trying to deflect criticism from himself by making believe that he has nothing to do with it. Hogwash!

How did LIPA come into existence anyway? Oh wait, yes, I remember. Governor Mario Cuomo drove LILCO into bankruptcy over Shoreham, wiped out the shareholders, and had the government take over. The government, of course, is better than private (albeit regulated) enterprise. And the residents of Long Island will be paying off Shoreham until 2033. Memo to Andrew Cuomo: you have been governor, hence with ultimate responsibility over LIPA, for the past 2 years. If it “hasn’t worked in a long, long time”, what have you been doing about it for 2 years??

After some research on internet, I would like to take back my previous comment. It may not be an accurate reflection on Mr. Kessel who may have done some good work over the years. It is just that we have been very frustrated about the storm handling and the high rates in this area. I believe we pay about 20 cents a kilowatt hour around here, which is quite a bit higher than natl avg.

We have more outages in this area than anyone can imagine. AND we pay higher taxes here than anyone can imagine. For the price of living here we get “0” in return. Why should it cost us more to live here when the government does NOT take care of us and lets us fend for ourselves here, literally sink or swim. WE here in the Five Towns so no sign of the Red Cross. WE here in the Five Towns are prone to power outages. It is expected and it is an outrage! LIPA should be better prepared. Whether that means that they have to have more transformers installed to carry less customers to each one, then do it. If that means that lines need to be routed to make better sense and to keep people from having so many outages then do it. If it means rerouting to get people up and running faster, then do it. LIPA knows what to expect even better than we do, but we can’t do anything about it, THEY can!
