Israel – Pro-Israel Group Launches Anti-Hagel Campaign

    16

US President Barack Obama (R) shakes hands with Chuck Hagel (L) after nominating him to be the next Secretary of Defense, while John Brennan (C), Obama's nominee to be the next CIA director, looks on in the East Room of the White House in Washington DC, USA, 07 January 2013. EPA/JIM LO SCALZOIsrael – A right-wing pro-Israel group has taken Hagel’s name on a website, stepping up the campaign against his nomination.

The site, which went live last week with www.chuckhagel.com is funded by The Emergency Committee for Israel, a non-profit organization running campaigns on the positions of political candidates in America.

The website raises questions regarding Hagel’s ability to serve as defense secretary, highlighting statements seen as anti-Israel or anti-Semitic.

Meanwhile, Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin on Tuesday said Israel should be “concerned, but not afraid of [Chuck] Hagel’s isolationist ideas.”

Responding to US President Barack Obama’s nomination of former Republican senator for the Pentagon post on Monday, Rivlin said Hagel’s nomination does not just affect Israel alone, “but the global strategic balance of power. Heigel’s isolationist policies will reflect on changing policies in America that will also have an impact on Israel.”

Rivlin stated Hagel’s approach should be “of concern to Israel, but not scare her,” adding that Israel must know how to handle the move without isolating herself from the stronghold of American security.

To further quell recent concern over Hagel’s appointment, Rivlin added “one person does not a policy make,” stating that the appointment will in no way endanger the strategic relationship between Israel and the US.

On a similar note, Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon gave a positive view of Chuck Hagel’s nomination as US defense secretary, though some commentators in the Jewish state expressed worries that the choice could open a new fissure in bedrock ties with Washington.

What chutzpah of this group to interfere in internal American politics. If there was a similar group in the USA, encourgaged by the government to oppose the reelection of Netanyahu, the Israelis would be screaming. Yet, when it is the other way around, it seems perfectly acceptable!

This group is reportedly organized by Elliot Abrahms wife and a bunch of other right wing neo-cons who are overplaying their hand with subtle allegations that Hagel is anti-semitic, etc. These arguments will hopefully explode in their face. Most senior Israeli officials and U.S. jewish community leaders have stated clearly that while Hagel would not have been their first choice, he is no anti-semite and is someone who is really smart and they can work with. They also agree that the President should have his choice of someone who agrees with his overall policy of restructuring the DOD to fight smaller targeted wars and not simply throw more money at every weapons system that the Generals dream up. Hagel will be confirmed with maybe 20+ negative votes from the far right and those who smear this American patriot will be even further marginalized for the next 4 years.

If the medina would worry about klal yisroel this issue would be moot. The fact is the fall out from this lobbying cannot be foreseen.

To #8 -Clear Thinker- Regarding Neo-cons-I regret to state that these neo-cons, a vast majority of whom are Yidden, are the same ones who urged Pres. George W. Bush to invade Iraq. Their advice was misguided, and the Iraq invasion was a disaster. Some thirty eight years earlier, there were also neo-cons (also a number of Yidden), who urged LBJ to send combat troops into Vietnam. Again, that latter action was a disaster, as even the late General Douglas MacArthur (a brilliant military strategist) had warned JFK not to get involved in a land war in S.E. Asia. The point that I&#8 217;m trying to make is that it was these desk chair eggheads, who felt it was ok to send other people&#8 217;s children to war. However, they made sure that their own children were not sent to either Vietnam, or Iraq. The gentiles are aware of this fact, and they not only resent that, but they resent groups such as the Emergency Committee for Israel, trying to interfere in internal American politics. Contrary to what our distinguished resident scholar, Schmuel G. has stated, the above group has the silent backing of the Israeli government. Schmuel can continue to print attacks, but he cannot change facts!
