EPA/JIM HOLLANDERIsrael – Eli Yishai, one of the three heads of the ultra-Orthodox Sephardic Shas party said Monday that he has had asked the national religious rabbis not to enter into an agreement with Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid over the push to make national service compulsory for all.

Lapid, whose party won a massive 19 seats in last month’s Knesset elections, made the concept of “sharing the burden” a cornerstone of his party platform, giving him broad appeal to many secular and middle-class Israelis.

“I appealed to the rabbis and I told them to do everything in their power sop as not to make a decision on the issue of the world of the Torah that goes against our stance and without our consent,” Yishai told Army Radio.

Yishai, who holds the post of interior minister in the outgoing government, added that his party was willing to remain outside the next coalition.

“They [the national religious parties] are allowed to enter the coalition even without Shas,” he said. “I haven’t asked any individual or any party to rescue Shas. I am ready to support the coalition from outside.”

The issue of drafting the ultra-Orthodox into the Israel Defense Forces or another form of national service has long been resisted by the Haredi communities inside Israel. Most ultra-Orthodox men are exempt from service as long as they are studying Torah full-time.

Could rav yosef explain why shas was allowed to sit with Lapid’s father? Was the father less anti-religious than the son?
    This is one big joke

    CHUTZPAH!!
They denigrate the Tzioni Rabbonim calling them all types of negative names and now want to call the shots! I hope they are outside the government and the “hamon am” realizes the losers that they are.

The People have spoken & we don’t want the hareidim involved in the governing of Israel anymore until you start fulfilling your duries of serving in National defense in Tzahal & also working for a living instead of living a life of being the shnorrers of the Jewish People.
If you can’t do that then go back to Galut in America or Poland or Germany

Really all parties need to respect and value the contributions that each group makes. When we stand together no one can defeat us. The leaders need to make that happen!

Chareidim should avoid joining the army as their goal is to water down the young Chareidim and turn him into a secularist. The arabs are not drafted yet get financial support and have seats in the Israeli supreme court. The Chareidim don’t have a single Chareidim judge in the supreme court. Don’t be a fool. Better send your eighteen year old boys here to ny for a few years in yeshiva and here there are an over abundance of frum girls seeking shidduchim. They can return a few years later once the draft age passes. It’s simple.
