Bin Laden turned to Abu Qatada, a Bethlehem-born Palestinian with Jordanian citizenship, in 2001 to lend him moral authority to issue Fatwas among Salafi extremists who were skeptical of his authority to rule on Islamic law. Due to Abu Qatada’s endorsement, Bin Laden’s Sharia rulings became more widely accepted in certain circles.
Abu Qatada has been in and out of British jails for years. He is currently out on bail pending a decision on deportation to Jordan, where he claims he faces possible torture.
Right wing groups have been protesting his presence in the neighborhood, prompting fears of racial violence among local Jews.
