New York, NY – The city is going to install 164 pedestrian countdown clocks at 21 intersections along major commercial arteries in all five boroughs in a major expansion of a small pilot project.

The DOT also intends to mount at least one video camera at each of the intersections to study the reactions of motorists to the clocks at different times of the day.
“You want to measure if they speed up or slow down [as they approach the intersections],” explained one source.
The clocks count down the seconds to the next light change.

The sources said the DOT hopes to collect enough data to determine if it makes sense to invest tens of millions of dollars for countdown capabilities for all of the city’s 85,000 pedestrian crossing signals. [nypost]
