Netanyahu’s visit to China’s eastern financial hub followed Israel’s weekend airstrike on a Syrian military complex near Damascus. That killed at least 42 Syrian soldiers and destroyed an Iranian shipment of guided missiles destined for Israel’s sworn foe Hezbollah in Lebanon.

On Tuesday, the prime minister and his wife toured Shanghai’s Ohel Moshe synagogue in the Hongkou district that was home to many of the 18,000 Jews granted refuge in Shanghai.

Netanyahu said that Jews then could only plead to be rescued but now have a powerful state and army to defend them.
