This is a yidishe company, and there are Hatzolah members that work there, which is why they were on scene. Most of the employees are from the Monroe area, and travel daily.
Worker survives fall down elevator shaft
Worker fell down elevator shaft at this old factory building
MIDDLETOWN – A 28-year-old worker at a the Classic Hosiery company building at 33 Mulberry Street in Middletown apparently escaped serious injury Tuesday afternoon when he fall about 30 feet down an elevator shaft.
Joseph Lefkowitz told Fire Chief Sam Barone that he pushed the button to open the elevator door and didn’t look before stepping in. The elevator wasn’t there and he fell, landing on his back.
Police Lt. Paul Rickard said the elevator shaft may have been used as a garbage pit of sorts as there were cardboard boxes and other junk thrown in the bottom. “That may very well have saved his life,” he said.
The city fire and code enforcement departments are looking into the situation to determine if there are any violations in the building.
The federal Occupational, Safety and Health Administration has also been notified of the incident and will be sending a team to investigate.

There is a heimishe company that fights OSHA, both in preventive compliance and in post incident consulting. I think its called something like legend safety or something. Bout time someone educates our people about workplace safety. They do training and all. They have ex osha people working for them. Whatever
He’s ok B”H. A few fractured bones. Nothing too serious.
Moral: Look before you leap….
It is unconscionable that they had this eleveator door operating at the regular push of a button knowing the danger of NO ELEVATOR at all.
At least put a BIG WARNING sign.
It seems they used this as a garbage dump.
Some people just lack BASIC seichel.
moral of the story . inspect all elevators yearly or as required so peple dont get hurt or killed
Thanks KJ EMS for doing a great job , and as well Mordchi Friedman who was one of the first responders as he was by the meeting with the State Police before , Mordchi keep up your chased we all need you !
unfortunately, most old open commercial elevators don’t have the safety feature to prevent the door from opening when the car is not there. and some that do have the safety lock, it will fail at some point, the commercial elevators are simply built very different than the residential ones, and the employees have to exercise extra caution.
we all can see mordchi friedman on the clip working over there , Thanks mordchi for your great job !
