Washington – The managers of New York City’s crowded airports say they will block a Bush administration plan to try to reduce flight delays around the country through an experimental auction of slots at their airports.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has issued a legal notice stating it will not accept any flights at its three major airports — John F. Kennedy, Newark Liberty International, and LaGuardia — that are the result of a government auction.
The bistate agency has long opposed the auction plan championed by the Bush administration as a way to reduce flight delays from those airports, which have a cascade effect, causing spillover delays all across the country.
Federal law beats state law.
New Yorks Tri-State air space is probably the most congested in the country – there are too many flights coming in and out of Laguardia especially – something most be done to reduce traffic and daily delays.
Air Space???
The sky is the limit……
At least some Agency has the guts to stick it to the FAA. Last year they tried (and still are) to bring hundreds of low flying planes in the Rockland County airspace (Monsey New Square) to “reduce congestion at the airport” imagine the NYS thruyway or the BQE diverting traffic to local street during rush hour to “reduce traffic.
P.S. Shush before Communist Mike reads this.
This auction is a TERRIBLE idea. Markets only work when there is a possibility of increased supply. HaShem knew this and forbade a free market for land in Eretz Yisrael (see the laws of Yovel). This auction will only cause prices to rise because you can’t get any more flights into the airports except late at night. The Port Authority is correct on this one, as is Sen. Schumer, whose strong opposition is not credited.
