The move has prompted public anger in Israel, where the move is being seen as anti-Semitic and linked to an international campaign against activities in Jewish settlements.

Orange CEO Stephane Richard announced wishes Wednesday to end the company’s relationship with Israeli company Partner Communications.

Orange issued a statement Thursday saying it doesn’t want to maintain a presence in countries where Orange itself is not a phone provider, and that the move is “in conformity with its brand policy.”

Orange said it “has no reason to take part … in a debate of a political nature.”
