Jerusalem – The woman who was fatally wounded in Yavneh last night when a chandelier crashed to the floor during a wedding has been identified as 54-year-old Aviva Hayon from Moshav Ezer in the south, according to Israel National News (http://bit.ly/1LrxAZ4). Another 21 people were badly injured from among approximately 800 guests.

Hayon’s heartbroken son, Erez, said he blames the State for what happened, saying, “Our family is broken and crushed. I see the State as being guilty for what happened. There are too many cases like this that happened in the past. We will do whatever it takes so such an incident will not happen again. We had a very happy event, the wedding. Everyone was happy, everyone danced. Once the chandelier broke, it crushed many, many people.”
Witnesses compared the tragedy to a terror attack, noting the hall floor was splattered with the blood of the dead and injured.
Walla! News reports (http://bit.ly/1fwYHVp) that police and safety engineers are now examining the chandelier’s support cables and are investigating why the cables did not hold, with one lighting expert saying, “There are many serious questions.”
Just three weeks ago, an indictment was filed against the managers of the hall for operating without a valid business license and using a temporary permit which had expired in June 2014. Moreover, in 2013, the owners of the hall were also convicted of unlicensed business practices, but were only punished with a financial penalty.
Hayon’s funeral took place today at 5:00 PM in the Moshav Emunim cemetery.

About eighteen years ago, there was another incident at a wedding hall in Israel. I’ll never forget the tape showing guests dancing on the wedding floor. All of a sudden, the floor collapsed, and scores of guests fell into the hole which opened up, falling several stories. I don’t remember how many were killed and injured. An investigation revealed that the construction of the building was shoddy, and not built according to safety standards and regulations. As a result, the building owner, and his partner were sentenced to prison for at least five years.
