Speaking alongside German Chancellor Angela Merkel to the European Parliament in Strasbourg, eastern France, Hollande said the risk of failure was “total war” and that Europe, if slow to grasp the scale of the refugee exodus, had now made a start.

As for Syria, Hollande reiterated the Paris line that any solution for Syria had to be based on an alternative to President Bashar al-Assad.

“What’s happening in Syria concerns Europe because what is going on there will determine the balances of power in the region for a long time,” he said.

“If we let the recent religious confrontations between Shiites and Sunnites get worse then don’t think that we won’t be affected. It will be a total war, a war that will also affect our territories and we must act.”

Just as it is clear that President Obama’s policy of conciliation and withdrawal has not worked in Afghanistan…it should be evident to any objective observer that Netanyahu’s policies with regard to the Territories are not working…after a decade what they have gained for Israel is international rejection, a growing “One-State Solution” movement, and less security on the ground.

I would like someone to cite an example in modern history where crack downs and use of force were ultimately victorious over a popular uprising. I cannot think of one. The examples where such policies ultimately failed are numerous: Cuba, Vietnam, Iran, Yugoslavia, Algeria, the former Iron Curtain countries, Chili, El Salvador, South Africa, to name a few. The righteousness of the cause is not terribly relevant…Real Politick and the dynamics popular revolts are the issue.

It is relevant to note that Fidel Castro’s revolutionary manual teaches that it “promotes revolution” to incite the government to clamp down on “the people” – the government’s reaction breeds “revolutionary soldiers.”
