Manhattan, NY – The NYPD’s plan to have 5,000 cameras trained on every sidewalk crack south of Canal Street has begun in a space-age hub that will be operating by the end of the month.

The “Ring of Steel” command center – which will keep 24-hour watch on high-profile targets like the World Trade Center site, the Stock Exchange and the Brooklyn Bridge – is on the 28th floor of a nondescript building at 55 Broadway.
Modeled after a highly touted network in London, the $89 million Lower Manhattan Security Initiative will fight crime and terrorism by blanketing the 1.7 square miles with 500 cameras.
The feds will pick up $70 million of the cost.
Police intend to be using 2,000 cameras by 2009 and 3,000 by 2011. They also hope to tap into images from an additional 2,000 private cameras.
It comes to remind us that Hashem is watching us all the time, 24-7.
This could go both ways: If used correctly it can highten safety & security of every citizen, if it falls into the hand of the wrong people for example in the hands of the power hungry Mayor then this will be a breech of everyones privacy, I personaly don’t have a problem with this as long as the camares are conspiciously placed for everyone to see & signs stating “you R under survailence” just like all the phone companys R required to tell U “this conversation might be monitored or recorded”. Otherwise we can all move straight to Russia… Its quite safe over there too… As long as your on the right side of Putin…
in london if you park illegally u get a ticket by mail cause you are nailed by those security cams. WE BETTER WATCH OUT!!!!
It reduces crime, i dont commit crime so i am happy to be safer.
sooner or later every vehicle, garbage can/bag, grocery bag, will have some kind of tag that the camera will pick up so they can mail you some kind of violation . why dont we just give the city our bank account numbers so they should be able to auto debit our account for some kind of discount on the uocoming violations>?????????
on canal street- will be used to stop counterfeit sellers — what will heimishe oilem do ifthey can’t have (fake) fancy name brands. Oy — won’t be alloweed in shul!
Thanks Mr Bloomberg!!!!!!
you can be sure that this means more tikets
Im ashamed of you guys for posting such rediculous remarks about designer shoppings on Canal St. This is a more serious situation.
I THOUGHT USA ARE HARD UP WHERE ARE THEY GETTING THE MONEY FROM FOR THESE CAMERAS SHAME THEY CANT GIVE THIS MONEY TO SAVE BUSINESSES GOING UNDER
Cameras in those areas are good, however legislation should be passed preventing their use for anything other than stopping terrorism and real crimes (i.e. violence or theft).
With Bloomberg as mayor, I have serious doubts that the cameras will be used only for their intended purpose.

isnt the city in a deficit or are these cameras watching the waterfalls
IT MEANS MORE TICKET’S I HOPE HE DOSENT WIN THE NEXT ELECTION
Bloomberg doesn’t do anything for the public good.
Bloomberg comes from a background of selfishly enriching himself at the expense of others and since he took office he is using this same rip off approach to rip off citizens so that he can enrich the financial pockets of the city at innocent peoples expense.
Bloomberg never fights crime unless he can make a PROFIT at it.
If a murderer is apprehended it will cost the city money to keep him in jail forever.
But if Bloomberg can give you a summons for parking, garbage and the like he makes himself money.
Here, Bloomberg RIPED-OFF the Federal Government SEVENTY million dollar RIP-OFF.
The Feds are going to pay Bloomberg 70 Million for these cameras which Bloomberg will use to make 500 MILLION (for his own vested interests) by issuing $ fines to New Yorkers and NOT to catch any serious violent criminals where he only looses money on that.
Thieves who rob don’t pay not even $1 summons for their crimes.
Rapists need not pay not even $1 fine.
Murderers need not pay not even $1 fine
But a Yid who double parks for 5 minutes to Daven Mincha has to pay $150 fine.
We all know what that the Cameras will only be used to supposedly pretend to “fight this horrible crime of Davening Mincha”, to enrich Bloombergs pockets, but not for fighting any real crime which only costs the city money to keep them in jail and they pay no fine at all.
