At issue is Hungary’s role in the deaths of more than 500,000 Jews during World War II.

The ruling Friday by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit says a 1947 peace treaty between the Allied powers and Hungary does not give Hungarian officials immunity from the lawsuit.

A federal judge had dismissed the case in 2014, saying it would conflict with the treaty’s terms.

The lawsuit from 14 survivors accuses the Hungarian government and its national railway of collaborating with the Nazis to transport Jews to death camps and seize their property.

The case now returns to the lower court.
