Jerusalem – Vendors Petition Court Against Mayor’s Sabbath Closures

Israel – Jerusalem supermarket owners petitioned the local district court on Monday demanding that Mayor Nir Barkat’s edict requiring them to shut down operations on the Jewish Sabbath be overturned.

According to Army Radio, the petition’s authors say that Barkat’s decision was motivated by “narrow political interests,” namely “assuaging the ultra-Orthodox parties in his coalition.”
