Brooklyn, NY – Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) today blasted The USPS for their decision to close the Blythebourne Station Post Office on Sundays. The Blythebourne Station, a high-trafficked post office located in the heart of Borough Park at 1200 51st Street, will adjust its service hours effective January 3, 2009.

Citing a “business decision” as the reason for closure, Postmaster General for Brooklyn Joseph Chiossone attempted to justify the determination in a letter to the Assemblyman. He stated in part, “Many of our customers are already purchasing stamps at local businesses, by mail, phone and online at usps.com.” The Postmaster noted that the station will, however, be accessible to the public during the remainder of the week, including Saturdays.

“It is galling that The Post Office has chosen to close this station on Sundays considering the demographics of the neighborhood in which it is located,” said an outraged Hikind. “Who will they even serve on Saturday in this community? The Jewish Sabbath will now become a day of rest for these postal employees, too.”

In a lame attempt to pacify inconvenienced consumers, Postmaster Chiossone suggested two alternate contract stations which are open for business on Sundays. “Neither of these sites is acceptable in lieu of official Post Office functions,” said Hikind. “These contract locations are overcrowded, inaccessible to many local residents, or offer only limited hours and services. The Post Office should immediately reverse their thoughtless and foolish decision.”

    Dear Mr. Hikind
I dont think Sunday closing will be such a problem for Boro Park ..I believe everyone would like to see better service mon-friday . We have to wait over 40 minutes to buy stamps or get a window to service the community.

The Post Office has no money. 80% of their budget goes to play wages and benefits to their employees. Most of the services done at a post office can be done online – either directly with the USPS or other vendors, such as Stamps.Com.

If you just need stamps, you can buy them at the supermarket (without a fee). The USPS also operates 24/7 automated machines where you can buy stamps and ship packages.

It may be a dumb decision because BP is loaded with yidden, but there is no prohibition of going to the post office during the week. I don’t believe that’s a goyish thing to do.

If only the machines would work once in a while, and then too if they would be full, then they may be viable alternatives for some services.

I had no idea that there were post office locations that are open on Sunday to begin with! Here in Monsey you have to use the self-serve machine on Sundays, and it only works about half the time. But the Boro Parkers will get used to it and do their mailing during the week.

If this Post Office would have had to survive in a competitive business environment, it would’ve been closed down long ago, based on customer
    dis – satisfaction.

Customers are treated like garbage, wait time is awful, it’s a pity……

The point is that if they need to save money they should close on Saturday, not Sunday. If they decided to close all weekend, meileh; but this decision to close on Sunday but open on Saturday is a slap in the community’s face. There’s no logic to it.

If the post office was run by people with brains they would be closed on Saturdays nationwide; the vast majority of people just don’t need Saturday service and it will save Billions.
If the station in BP is profitable despite paying overtime then it makes good business sense to be open – otherwise it too is a waste of taxpayer money.

Everyone on VIN can certainly purchase stamps on USPS.com
You can also print out shipping labels and ship almost everything today from your home. You can preorder the boxes and they send it to you for free.
They should close all weekend, but during the week there should not have to be such a long waiting time. There are plenty of windows, they just need more workers. Any other post office has much more workers than customers.
With all the mailings we do in our community, for simchas, parties, and other functions, we probably are one of the busiest in the country…..so we should have a larger staff to serve our needs. The postal service has become more competitive in the past few years, thanks to the competition of Fedex, UPS and DHL.
If we are dissatisfied, we can take our business to them.

My letter carrier is the shop steward of his local. He says the USPS is chopping costs left and right. Don’t be surprised if mail delivery stops on Saturday too. That’s fine, but I agree with other here. Then they need to keep the post offices open later Monday through Friday.

Besides free supplies via mail, you can also buy stamps through the mail. I use 27 cent stamps for post cards. Well, the 24/7 vending machine by me doesn’t carry those. So I order them via mail and I pay by check. The postage to mail your check and receive your stamps are free.

Wait until we get nationalized healthcare. The post office is a perfect blue print. If you can wait 40 minutes for a stamp, you can wait 40 minutes or more to see a doctor.

To me it looks like the employees are asleep all week long, maybe if they’ll sleep all day Sunday, we’ll get better service the rest of the week.

They have 5 windows and 2 working zombies. Anyone who is in the business of mail order will be effected by this and this is unfair being that we cant use the P/O on Saturday and in the Winter on Friday as well.

They should treat their customers based on their needs, like banks do. Close on Staurday and open on Sundays. Besides the fact that whoever uses them, knows they close sometimes five minutes early and are extremely unfriendly.

I hope Dov Hikind does something (besides complaining) as he usually does. Dove I know I can count on you. Can we log a complaint anyware?

the U.S. postal service is over 2 billion dollars in the red (i.e. in debt) to those who don’t understand what that means and how bad that is the postal service said that for the first time in its history (i.e. that is since the postal service was first established) they are going to lay off more then 40 thousand workers its not just boro park that will suffer the whole u.s. will suffer

p.s. someone mentioned DHL as competition
as of January ’09 DHL will only be international they wont deliver from point A to point B in the US so the competition gets smaller 

Consumer reports recently did a test to see which of the three carriers Ups, FedEx, USPS came out the cheapest for service to all parts of the country. and USPS beet the other carriers in next day 2nd day and ground.
and if mail is not delivered on Sundays so we can all wait till Monday to send something out.

Any service organization, like the Postal SERVICE, that is loosing money should want to improve their service, not cut costs. The Boro Park branch is the most ignorant, arrogant, and incompetent collection of morons I have ever encountered in any Postal Organization. They loose forwarding information and paperwork and regularly tell customers that they are the ones who did something wrong. When you try to get something done they make you wait for 40 minutes and then tell you to “call back tomorrow” so they won’t have to actually do something, like perhaps, their JOB!

It’s simple, if you don’t treat your customers right, they will go elsewhere. If the Post Office wants to actually make money, then get rid of these useless wastes of space and hire some of the thousands of competent people who have recently been laid off and know what it means to actually do a job. The alternative is that the branch will continue to loose money and be forced to close, and all those people will be cut anyway. The only difference being that now Boro Park will no longer have a Post Office.
