Bedminster Township Mayor Steven Parker wrote to U.S. Rep. Leonard Lance last week saying they don’t want to disproportionately burden their taxpayers for Trump’s visits to Trump National Golf Club, NJ.com reported (http://bit.ly/2ik2tCQ ).

“If we take a cue from his campaign, he may choose to weekend in Bedminster perhaps 5-10 times over the coming year with the First Lady perhaps spending much of the summer here,” Parker said in his request for Lance to help find a way to reimburse the town from federal funds.

Such visits could result in overtime costs of more than $12,000 a day, the township said. It would also be impossible for their small police force to satisfy a federal request for six 24-hour security posts, officials said.

Somerset County also will seek reimbursement for security costs.

“Somerset County can’t absorb this type of financial burden on a recurring basis,” said Jack Bennett, a spokesman for the county prosecutor’s office.

The office plans to talk with federal officials about funding reimbursements, Bennett said, in the event Trump visits in the future and the county’s help is requested for security purposes.

Congress recently passed an appropriation of $7 million to help local law enforcement agencies cover the Republican president-elect.

Both the township and county would have to apply for reimbursement, said John Byers, a spokesman for Lance, a Republican.

“Such grants were given to Chicago and Hawaii for the President’s security and we will make the case for the same treatment,” Byers said.
