The operative, Zabi-ul-Taifi, was arrested with six other militants on the outskirts of the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar.
“Taifi is among those arrested today,” an intelligence official told Reuters on condition of anonymity. The nationalities of the other militants arrested are being established.
One intelligence official said that it is believed Taifi was the “mastermind” of the July 7, 2005 bombings that rocked the London transportation system when homicide bombers set off explosions on underground train cars and a bus, leaving 52 people dead and hundreds injured.
The raid took place in the village of Bara Qadeem. One resident said that he saw “goras” — a word usually used to refer to white Westerners — watching it.
“They came in a black car with tinted glass, but did not take part in the operation,” he said.
