Target said it was overwhelmed by the high demand of Israeli consumers after the Borderfree shipping company offered free shipping to Israel on orders made Aug. 18-20. The orders were to be delivered by DHL.

“Due to the much higher than anticipated response to the Borderfree Free Shipping promotion, we are unable to deliver order [number] and had to cancel it. We apologize for this inconvenience,” read the letter sent last week to many Israeli customers, which included a Target logo but was signed by Borderfree.

An estimated 20,000 orders were placed during the three-day promotion, according to reports. DHL told Haaretz that it delivered a few thousand packages, and that those are the only ones Israeli customers received.

The Israeli business daily Globes reported Sunday that many of the orders faced customs issues, since there are limits on the quantity of items, the kinds of food items and the amount of money that can be spent on such orders from outside of the country.

So Israel is not into free trade even with its closest ally? Hmm perhaps the USA should rethink its free trade deals as well?

This has nothing to do with free trade. It is called a computer glitch whose exploitation is a international form of recreation, especially in our frum communities. Target never intended for the offer to include free shipping outside of the lower 48 states. Notwithstanding that many rabbinical authorities have ruled that paying substantially less than the market price may be a form of geneivah, we still have substantial numbers of Orthopracs Jews who believe that “chapping a metziyah” which was never intended to be offered by the seller is still their entitlement. This was clearly a case of “mekach to-os” on the part of Target. It’s unfortunate that the matter has already made the Israeli talk shows that have hosted buyers who lost nothing in the end carrying on as though they are aggrieved parties entitled to compensation.

We had a family business and started selling online in 1999. We were always honest and honored our commitments.
I am astounded when firms like Google, Amazon and now Target get to choose what commitments to honor and which they decide to evade.
I do understand pure mistakes but this does not seem to have been a mistake.
