“I did get a call from Con Ed to confirm that it was a Con Ed explosion,” Councilman David Weprin told CBS 2. “The main concern now is the safety of any people who are in the house.”

Firefighters are fighting the resulting two-alarm blaze from the explosion that completely destroyed a house at 80-46 260th Street, shortly before 5 p.m.

Officials believe the explosion may have been caused by a gas leak. CBS 2 has learned that Con Edison officials had been called to the area earlier Friday after reports of gas fumes coming out of the sewers.

At least two people suffered injuries as a result of the blast. It’s not yet known whether civilians or firefighters were the victims or what the extent of their injuries were. Firefighters could be seen digging through the remains of the house that exploded looking for any victims.

Flaming debris could be seen scattered several houses away. The house that sustained the explosion was completely leveled. There is no word if anyone was inside at the time of the blast.

How do you confirm that Con Ed “may be responsible”? You can just as easily confirm that the oven “may have been left on” or that “the water heater may have been the cause.” You don’t confirm with a “may”…that just means it’s not confirmed.
Also, there is no possible way that a Con Ed person called a Councilman to take responsibility before ANYONE has done an investigation.
    Amazing.

There was a womans body found in the house that exploded and leveled out. She was not believed to be Jewish. The neighboring house which was engulfed in flames, belongs to an extremely hospitable, well known Shomer Shabbos couple/family who have have had hundreds of Shabbos guests in their house, and were the first family to be called if someone needed a place to stay. Needless to say, their Mitzvos saved them from any harm…
