Next said that it had investigated the complaint and found the image, among a series of cartoons, was inspired by a picture of Lenin, the former Soviet leader.

But a spokesman said it was withdrawing the remaining 5,200 pairs of the underwear anyway. He said: “The complaint came in today and by the end of the day all 5,200 will be withdrawn.

“We have checked with the designer who confirmed the image was inspired by Lenin. Nonetheless, if even one customer is offended or upset we are happy to withdraw the range.”

Ben said he was happy the product had now been withdrawn.

Earlier this year Next warned it would raise clothes prices as it is battered by the “double challenge” of a weak pound and the recession.

Prices in the group’s autumn and winter ranges will increase by between 3-5 per cent, or the equivalent of about 50p on a £20 pair of jeans.
The group said it was hiking the prices as it faced the headwinds of sterling’s slump in value and increasing import costs.

People should grow up and get a sense of humour. we need to learn that we don not have a monopoly on grief and suffering. this type of things does nothing to decrease real anti semitism.

“We have checked with the designer who confirmed the image was inspired by Lenin. Nonetheless, if even one customer is offended or upset we are happy to withdraw the range.”

This implies that since the customer was mistaken about which evil murderous dictator was pictured, really it’s all OK, but we’re going to withdraw it anyway. No apology, of course, since it’s perfectly fine to use an image of Lenin but it wouldn’t be to use one of Hitler. Have I got it right? So tell me, why exactly is Lenin better than Hitler? Because he died before he could kill as many people as he would have liked to?

oh well, i guess mr radomski is feeling pretty jolly these days, seeing his name in the media. i need him to get himself over to my house in a hurry; my underwear came out of the washing machine wrinkled in a way that suspiciously resembles achashverosh’s left ear. i urgently need his advice; do i sue hanes, maytag or both???
