Brooklyn, NY – A state senator is poised to cut a deal with prosecutors that will give his embattled fellow Democrats one less thing to worry about.

Short-fused Sen. Kevin Parker (D-Flatbush), whose conviction on felony assault charges would cost the post-coup Senate Democrats a seat they can ill afford to lose, is working on a deal to plead guilty to a misdemeanor in connection with his alleged assault of a news photographer.
Under state law, a misdemeanor isn’t sufficient to boot elected officials from office.
Parker did not respond to multiple calls and texts seeking comment. A spokesman for the Brooklyn district attorney’s office declined to comment.
Parker was charged last month with second- and third-degree assault, third- and fourth-degree criminal mischief, third-degree menacing and second-degree harassment after he allegedly attacked the photographer outside his Brooklyn home.
If convicted, Parker faces up to seven years in prison.
Parker represents what’s considered a “safe” Democratic district, which means the party would likely retain his seat in a special election should he be forced to give it up.
But given the current chaos in the Senate, the Democrats can’t afford to lose a single vote – even temporarily – especially if Sen. Hiram Monserrate’s likely return to their arms splits the chamber 31-31.
