Brooklyn, NY – Hikind Calls NY Daily News Cartoon Despicable And Anti-Semitic

    53

Brooklyn, NY – In response to Glen and Gary McCoys’s anti-Semitic, syndicated cartoon, The Flying McCoys, which appeared in yesterday’s Daily News, Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) today sent a letter to Daily News Publisher Mort Zuckerman “demanding a public apology from your newspaper for displaying this ugly cartoon.”

The Flying McCoys bills itself as a “delightfully absurd comic panel [which] takes superheroes, office humor, huggable animals and twisted relationships, blending them in a bizarre marriage of Gary Larson, The New Yorker, Conan O’Brien and Mad Magazine.”

Hikind, however, completely disagrees with this description. In his letter, Hikind wrote, “A father telling his son to, “Stand back, son. I think Rex has rabbis” with two men dressed in religious garb similar to how many Rabbis dress, including black hats, black coats, beards and side curls, standing on either side of a dog is not just demeaning, insulting and repulsive but surely smacks of anti-Semitism á la Goebbels.

Hikind, a child of Holocaust survivors continued, “The arrests last Thursday by the FBI of 44 individuals including a few rabbis are no excuse to slander the entire Jewish people. To imply that Rabbis have rabies and are therefore contagious is to indulge in the vilest type of character assassination.”

Can someone explain how do you interpret the cartoon? I could not understand the theme behind it. How does Hikind extrapolate from the cartoon that “rabbis have rabies”? Can the theme be that “Rabbis can be more threatening than Rex the dog”? i.e. like the Hassid who dealt with organ trafficking at gun point?

Get over it Dov. It is neither funny nor anti-semitic.

Oh, c’mon lighten up. It was a play on words and is not anti-semitic.

Character assassination does not even begin to describe this. Imagine if some yid had made a cartoon proclaiming that born-again ministers were a “disease” that dogs get. This is early 20th century antisemitism rearing its ugly head again.

Every yid should immediately cancel subscriptions and stop patronizing any store that carries this paper. This is not the kind of cartoon you can apologize for. This was not “poor judgment” or anything else…. this cartoon is very deliberate in its message.

Until the editors (ALL OF THEM) are fired, no yid should go near this paper and make sure to let any place you shop know that you will not buy from them if they carry it on their newsstand.

as a Holocaust survivor it never entered my mind that this cartoon is anti-semitic.
I view it as a cartoon and as being funny. Nothing more and nothing else. Not all that appears in the newspaper has to be one or the other.

Sorry, Dov – I find the actions of the frum men arrested last week and others in the past a lot more offensive than any cartoon. The photos of yamalkas and tzitzis on a perp are offensive!

Of course I don’t agree with this cartoon, but after all, who gave the cartoonists the opportunity to make such jokes?

And for all those crying, “Entrapment!”, no one forced them to take the bait.

Does this cartoon remind us of the famous shrimer cartoons? Or is it a one time joke that could be made on everyone

I’m glad Dov is speaking out. If a black man shot a white man and there was a similar cartoon portraying all blacks as criminals, the whole country would be up in arms, and rightfully so.

The reaction this cartoon got is a sign of evrything wrong with the jew of today. Where is your pride, instead of making a scene out of this miniscule matter how about a little introspection into our actions as a nation as a community and demand an apology from the leaders and public officials who were a part of this giant chilul hashem. Instead of crying ANTI SEMITASIM whenever you hear derogatory statements about Jews maybe the time has come to speak up and PUBLICLY put an end to the people who obviously don’t give a crap about the publics preception of us nor our own preception of them. I say down with any leader rabbi askan politician from whose actions are not absolutely clear that they are one hundred percent for the good of those they lead.

Thank you for following up on this. For all of those commenting here who are missing the part of this cartoon that is offensive; The cartoon is quiet clearly comparing Rabbi’s to Rabies. Yes it is a play on words (#10 Merkin); however, quite a disgusting one. No other community would stand for such an offensive cartoon. Newspapers would not dare to use such a play on words on an Imam or a priest. Newspapers would not dare to use such a play on words on the African American and Hispanic Community.

For all those stating that this is not offensive because of the embarrassment of those who were arrested recently; i am not sure if the arrest of rabbis, makes it open season on our community. The cartoon has pictures of rabbis, not pictures of the rabbis who were arrested.

    Relax Dov…

Obviously this cartoon isn’t very nice and maybe even borderline offensive. Don’t forget when the catholic church pedophilia scandal came out the cartoonists had a field day too. These are cartoonists and this is America in the 21st century.

I believe there are bigger issues to deal with. ( But then again … I don’t need the popular vote )

But this cartoon is way out of line..because it totally does not address the issue at hand or what happened.
Just some twisted joke this guy probably had in his mind since grade school..and now he feels the climate is right to draw it up.

I think the cartoonist is saying, dont deal with Jews/Rabbis as thier bite could be bad. In other words, dont deal with a Dweck as you could be entrapped. THe play is on the wrod rabies/rabbis. Big deal. In Dwecks case it happens to be true. Dweck caused all Jews to be looked at as traitors just like Madoff caused all Jews to be looked at as crooks. Is it true? Of course not. But for the moment it is true. Are all Moslems terrorists? No. But after 9/11 cartoons came out showing the towelheads as terrorists. Such is life. More attention is created by arguing against it then just leaving it alone. Time will pass and people will forget about it. Dov- let sleeping dogs lie. Dont make Foxmans mistake with Gibson’s movie JC which was the only reason it grossed close to a billion dollars. Had he kept quiet, it would have been seen for what it was, an ultra violent and bloody movie not worth seeing without a barf bag and the product of a sick mind.
I dont advocate silence in the face of comments by important politicians of public figures. But a cartoonist? Who cares.

I think its a funny play on words. You cant say the dogs have priests because it just doesnt make sense. Rabbis, rabies, can’t you hear that they sound similar??? With regards to the payos, beards and hats, if they didnt have those, then they would just look like men, and again it wouldnt make sense. Can’t anyone have a sense of humor without thinking the world is after them. Not all goyim (including the municipal governments upstate) are anti semitic!!!

I think it’s more on the play with the word “rabies”. Although I could understand how someone can get offended by equating “rabbis” with the word “rabies”…

The father here looks like an ignorant redneck so I think the cartoonist is implying that this person is not very intelligent. However, if the father was to have a business suit on and his son well dressed, that would be a different matter completely.

Yes, Dov, the cartoon is disgusting. If Dov would be more like Al Sharpton and less Jews had full time jobs, he could have arranged a public protest at the Daily News building. That being said, the illegal actions of the Rabbis and politicians were a lot more despicable than this cartoon. Where was Dov’s public outcry against what they did? I didn’t see it anywhere. I hope Dov isn’t too closely associated with any of the Rabbanim or politicians who were on the take and committing outrageous crimes. It seems that everyone who has their picture splashed across newspapers and magazines these days is a complete thief.

Sheesh. When did Hikind become a Jewish Al Sharpton?

If you’ve ever seen this comic before, you’ll realize that it often uses silly puns. In this case, it’s just punning rabbis and rabies. There’s nothing more to it.

Take a look at the comic. You can find past ones in Yahoo News. It’s full of simple silly humour.

In my opinion this cartoon is not funny. At first, I didn’t get it. Is the cartoon implying that rabbis are or like flees? Is it implying that rabbis and religious Jews have to be ostracized since the guy says “stand back, son..”?

I think I’m reading into this too much.

As a daily reader of The Daily News who gets home delivery, I was apalled by this comic. As soon as I got home yesterday, I fired off an E-mail to the editors. There is no way to dismiss this comic as anything but anti-semitic. Daily News; there’s enough hatred out there without this, leave that to Reverand Al Sharpton.

This is not a political cartoon, it’s just a play on words. A Jewish person could make the same thing and it would be funny, nobody would call it antisemitic.

All regular readers of the “funnies” will recognize that this is just a typical comic – twisting a word around and presenting it in a surreal and completely off the wall way. This is funny in the way that any of the Flying McCoys are funny – no more, no less, not anti-semitic any more than any of their other comics are anti whoever it is that is portrayed. These comics are not news or political commentary, like, say, Toles, and thus no more or no less needs to be read into it than a simple twist of words and backwards perspective of an every day occurrence. When watching from the outside, we see how Sahrpton makes an utter udder out of himself with his rally at every silly thing. Let’s not become like that!

Considering Mort Zuckerman was president of the Conference of Presidents and there was a whole uproar about Iran’s International Holocaust Cartoons Contest a few years later, I am sure Zuckerman spoke out just as he did most recently against Hillary Clinton’s stance on Israel. As the owner of the Daily News he surely had an opinion about this… unless he is anti-religious/ anti rabbi. Could be he resents beard-wearing rabbis, if he thinks some may question the Jewishness of his eldest daughter???

It’s a play on words, rabbis- rabies. I don’t see hostile intent. It’s as inocuous to jews as the dead monkey cartoon was to blacks. Dov get a life and do something important. The frum community has bigger problems than cartoons.
