The nature of the threat is unknown. According to sources, the employee was arrested in his New Jersey home after a co-worker alerted authorities that the suspect made threatening remarks about President Obama.

At some point after learning of the threat, law enforcement officials searched the home and found several weapons.

Correction: An earlier version of this post identified a retired N.J. state trooper named Joseph Erb as the man arrested. He is not connected to this case, and neither is any N.J. state trooper.

In case some VIN readers haven’t noticed, there has been a much more agressive follow up and apprehension of those exercising there so called “first amendment rights” to advocate violence against the president. While we have some persistent libertarian posters who say its OK, the government and courts clearly believe otherwise and properly so. In today”s increasinglyn tense political and partisan environment, we cannot allow individuals to make statements that could trigger violence against elected officials

we will soon find out if he was a real threat or not but its scary how it was a co worker who told on him maybe in this case thats the correct thing to do but its a slippery slope till children will need to tell on their parents and religious figures, doctors, lawyers on their clients

According to the Secret Service’s own reports the current President has been receiving about four times as many death threats as the last one. This started during the primaries last year.

The Secret Service takes all threats against those whom it protects seriously. When the suspect has the means to carry out the threat (a few dozen guns) and the opportunity (security worker at an airport the President will be in) with access to secured areas it gets their complete attention.

Threatening to kill the President has been a crime for quite a while. If a jury finds him guilty he could face several years in prison.
