Monroe Highway DepartmentMonroe, NY – Even if his only job was overseeing the maintenance of 41 miles of roads in Monroe, Roy Montanye, the town’s highway superintendent since 1988, would be earning well above his peers in the region.

But Montanye also collects salaries for two other functions he performs for the town: he oversees its six water systems, and he has kept an eye on its shelter for stray and abandoned animals ever since the town fired its full-time animal control officer four years ago.

Toss in the $582 stipend Montanye gets for serving on the Zoning Board of Appeals, and you come up with an impressive salary: $128,500, the highest compensation of any employee in 28 towns that have so far responded to a Times Herald-Record request for 2009 municipal payrolls.

Few people in town government except police officials and some hired professionals approach that pay level in this region, judging from the salaries the Record has compiled.

Montanye, who didn’t return a call for comment, already held the titles of highway superintendent and water superintendent in 2005 when the town fired its animal control officer and temporarily closed its shelter while officials decided how it would continue to run.

Since when is that a lot of money for someone responi sble for hundereds of milllions of dollars of facilities. We pay more than that to starting lawyers who have just graduated law school who I wouldn’t trust to litigate a traffic ticket. Whoeever wrote this article has no sense of what real world salaries are like for anyone in a position of responsibility.

Is this Russia? If it’s legal what’s wrong?

A few more inciting articles like this, the freedom of speech in the USA will also be attacked and this writer will then be able to move to China where he will like the salaries.

128.000 in this expensive enviroment is not alot at all. what`s the fuss? My real question is why doesn`t he repair roads in Kiryas Joel that belong to the town of Monroe and not the village. It`s not fair.

It appears that he replaced another full time employee and he does his job well. Let him get paid for the work he does. Is it better if they had three people doing three functions and pay 3 x 60,000. This is just another tactic of the Record to smear those are in good terms with KJ
