This vote marks the final step in the county’s efforts to overhaul its solid waste system as it prepares to bid farewell to a filled-to-capacity landfill at the beginning of the new year.

The Legislature also unanimously approved an agreement hammered out last week that will save 15 county jobs in waste disposal and eventually place up to six county workers formerly employed at the landfill with IESI, whose employees will run the transfer stations. Still, about six county workers will be displaced because of the closing of the landfill come Jan. 1.

Beginning Friday, county residents – besides paying the new waste fee of roughly $85 per household – will pay a tipping fee of $85 a ton or $4 per bag for opaque bags and $2 per bag for clear bags that contain no recyclable items.

The new system for solid waste pickups is much better environmentally and also much more fair in pricing. Under the old system, many families paid the same for garbage pickup no matter now many bags they put out. Now, you will have to pay by the bag so that large families who leave out a lot of garbage will have to sort their garbabe between recyclable and non-recyclable and pay more for each extra bag. This will make them focus more on reducing their garbage output and helping the environment.

It is expensive to take out the trash!

If only they could do something about the politics…

Baltimore has also changed the pricing for trash by the bag and it has materially reduced the amount of trash put out on the street (notwithstanding some whining by the frummies about how inconvenient reduced pickups would be after shabbosim and yomtovim when they used a lot of disposable plates and cups).

How are they going to charge per bag? Is there going to be a bookeeper traveling on the truck?
