New York, NY – Fewer New York City area residents are taking trains, buses or driving into the city. Officials say the decline has cost the nation’s largest mass transit system more than $100 million in revenue between 2008 and 2009.

A report issued Thursday by state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s drop in ridership between October 2008 and October 2009 is linked to the city’s economy. It lost 110,000 jobs during that period.

The MTA reported more than 2.6 billion riders used the network of subways, buses and railroads in 2008, and 300 million vehicles crossed its bridges and tunnels.

By comparison, the MTA says 75 million fewer customers used the transit system through October 2009.

no problem! just raise the fares 50% like the mayor did with the parking meters. then more people will have a problem.

Maybe they should drop back the prices like it was before instead of raising theme every few months

the drop is because there are NO JOBS. At least they’re saving their daily fares for bread & butter

Actually since they raised the prices on the bridges, tunnels and the bus and train system, most of us just walk, bike or ride a horse into the city. Its just cheaper..

This is the way they operate. They say they are short and raise fares. Then they find 300 million that just appeared and they say they will improve the system. What they mean is they will dish out bonuses to the guys on top.

This is what mayor Bloomberg wanted when he wanted with his congestion pricing plan to tax anyone that drives into the city, so now not only are we not driving into the city we aren’t coming at all so now you have ur city for yourself and ur rich friend that can still afford to the city enjoy it and pay for it urself.
If you think raising the prices will help the only thing it will do is force less people to use it and force people to move away from NYC

2.6 billion people use the subway? No wonder it’s always so crowded that I have to stand while riding it.

I dont buy that they have less riders. whos auditing this? ive been riding the subway for years and i see zero difference, in fact it seems more crowded now! they are just trying to cover their a$$es so they can raise the fares and get more money.

The Law of Supply and Demand will always rule. Raise prices + cut demand = Lost Rider Revenue. Similarly, High American Auto Costs + Low Quality = Lost Auto Sales Revenue. Politicians never figure this out. They think they are above the Law of Economics.
