Lawyers for the teenagers are appealing to a higher court after Ramapo Justice Rhoda Schoenberger on Tuesday refused to lower her $10,000 bail for all teenagers.

Ramapo police charged Kyle Silceira, 16; Anthony Soto, 18; and Denise Lopez, 17, all of Spring Valley, with hate crimes after witnesses reported they threatened several residents in the largely Orthodox Jewish neighborhood at 10:30 p.m. Saturday on Neil Road.

The teens have been held in jail since Sunday, when they first appeared before the judge following their arrest on Saturday.

Schoenberger, who runs for office in Ramapo, told the lawyers on Tuesday that they should seek a bail reduction in a higher court, though she is empowered to reset bail.

Schoenberger also refused to consider the lawyers’ argument that the Ramapo police incorrectly charged the teenagers with felony charges. The lawyers argued the charges were misdemeanors.

Defense lawyers argued Schoenberger bail was excessive, beyond the amount needed to ensure the high school students appeared in court.

before anyone reacts one way or the other, based on experience I had (regarding a frum defendant) bail was also set for 10K and he sat until we came up for the funds. The bail is set by the type of charge brought, so a misdemenor may get an appearance ticket, however a felony charge and depending on what level will incur a higher bail.

In New York City this type of thing happens daily to the Yidden, so it’s nice to see someplace actually punishes this behavior.

If you go to the actual article at lohud.com, you will be sickened when you see the comments. There is such hatred towards the chasidic community right now, that they are actually blaming the Jewish community for creating the animosity stemming from the takeover of the east ramapo school board.

I lived in Monsey my whole life. There is good reason why the Non-Jews hate us here.
