New York, NY – City officials have spent tens of thousands of dollars on car services so far this year, despite Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s public embrace of mass transit.

That’s according to a new online database that tracks and posts city expenditures hours after they are processed.
The database is called Checkbook NYC and it was unveiled Thursday by the city comptroller.
Officials said it shows 99% of all the money the city spends – more than $35 billion since Jan. 1.
Among the expenditures are more than $10,000 in car service charges among the mayor’s own budget staff, more than $66,000 by law department officials and more than $11,000 racked up by City Council staffers.
Bloomberg often talks about how New York City’s subway system is the best in the world.
Let these big shots take the subway, like the common people. It is ludicrous to be spending so much money on maintaining city cars, when there is an excellent mass transit system in the midst of these city officials. What chutzpah!
We don’t want our public officials wasting their time on the subway or bus. Its also impractical in the summer since they would arrive at their important meetings all ‘faschvitzed” and that would not be appropirate for such chashuve people.
Mass Transit is only for people who work hard to earn living and don’t flush down their hard earned money
This is really silly reportage: there are trips that are most efficiently taken by subway, trips that are most efficiently taken by bus, and trips most efficiently taken by taxi or car service. All depends on the nature of trip, the destination, the time of day (or night), etc. There may well be trips that involve multiple modes of transport!
I don’t understand the issue – every city official and employee should be allowed to travel during work hours in any way they please – when they use mass transit, the city should pay, and when they take car services / limos / private jets etc., they should pay it themselves. So what’s the problem?
