Jerusalem – On Facebook: Israeli Soldier Posed With Bound Arab

(AP Photo/sachim.tumblr.com)Jerusalem – A former Israeli soldier posted photos on Facebook of herself in uniform smiling beside bound and blindfolded Palestinian prisoners, drawing sharp criticism Monday from the Israeli military and Palestinian officials.

Israeli news websites and blogs showed two photographs of the woman. In one, she is sitting legs crossed beside a blindfolded Palestinian man who is slumped against a concrete barrier. His face is turned downwards, while she leans toward him with her face upturned. Another shows her smiling at the camera with three Palestinian men with bound hands and blindfolds behind her.

The incident was a reminder of the fraught relations between Israeli soldiers and the West Bank Palestinians under their control.

Israeli soldiers have run into trouble on the social media sites like Facebook and YouTube before. Most recently a group of combat soldiers were reprimanded for breaking into choreographed dance moves while on patrol in the West Bank town of Hebron. The dance featured prominently on YouTube.

Palestinian Authority spokesman Ghassan Khatib condemned the photos and said they pointed to a deeper malaise — how Israel’s 43-year-old occupation of Palestinians has affected the Israelis who enforce it.

“This shows the mentality of the occupier,” Khatib said, “to be proud of humiliating Palestinians. The occupation is unjust, immoral and, as these pictures show, corrupting.”

The Israeli military also criticized the young woman, who Israeli news media and bloggers identified from her Facebook page as Eden Aberjil of the southern Israeli port town of Ashdod. No official confirmed her identity.

“These are disgraceful photos,” said Capt. Barak Raz, an Israeli military spokesman. “Aside from matters of information security, we are talking about a serious violation of our morals and our ethical code and should this soldier be serving in active duty today, I would imagine that no doubt she would be court-martialed immediately,” he told Associated Press Television News.

It was not clear whether the army could punish the woman, because she has finished her compulsory military service.

The comments by the woman and her friend in an exchange below one photograph suggested how casually the picture was treated, including jokes and sexual innuendoes.

“You’re the sexiest like that,” her friend wrote.

“I wonder if he’s got Facebook!” the woman in the photograph responded. “I have to tag him in the picture!”

Aberjil did not respond to reporters’ questions Monday.

The photographs were a reminder of snapshots taken in 2003 by American soldiers at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq that showed Iraqi detainees naked, humiliated and terrified. In that case, some soldiers went to prison after the photos came to light.

The photographs of the Israeli soldier and the Palestinians, by contrast, show no overt physical abuse or coercion of the prisoners, although they are ridiculed in the comments between the soldier and her friends.

Palestinians are routinely handcuffed and blindfolded when they are arrested to stop them from trying to flee.

Shameful. When soldiers do this they become thugs, not soldiers. And the Army becomes a mob. She should be disciplined.

The dance routine in Hebron? That was actually kind of funny.

For a major masmid, you seem to be an expert on “prutzahs” but please don’t project your own gutter-minded thoughts on to this young IDF soldier. The issue here is not her morality but her lack of judgement regarding the treatment of prisoners. The chilul hashem is your being so judgemental about another yid who could just as easily be your daughter.

Dear non Jewish person posing as Jewish person,

Did you perhaps protest the numerous Arab decapitation videos proudly posted on the web by their perpetrators? Did you protest the numerous “post martyrdon” videos where Arabs proudly declare their intentions to commit mass murder in order to become really good Moslems? Did you protest the numerous videos aimed at children in an attempt to radicalize them to become mass murderers when they grow up? This picture of absolutely nothing is non issue and to make an issue is aiding an abetting Arab mass murderers. They also say “look at the terrible things the Jews are doing to the poor Moslems” (even though absolutely nothing is happening) therefore we have the right ot kill every single jew on the face of the planet. Typical Moslem logic. Remember these are the guys that regularly say “the Holocaust never happened and the Israelis are like Nazis.” Which is obviously meaningless if the Holocaust never happened. But it makes sense to them.

What!?!? The arabs are crying??!! This is nothing to them! Did everyone forget about daniel perl? did they blindfold him and just take pictures?! Tistaklu l’an higanu! and everybody is against this lady? (not that I think she did anything NORMAL, she’s probably totally insane). But to arabs? Why? when they spread terror around the whole entire world! Listen here brothers, I hope more do this to them, but not in israel, rather in dubai, uae, etc etc, (cant fit all arab countries in space allocated).

I dont feel bad for the arabs at all! This feels much better than blindfolding and being beheaded! YM”SH

What do you think the prisoners would be doing if the situation was reversed? Well I’ll tell you, they would be yelling in the streets while flapping their tongue’s around in their mouth making that retarded ignorant sound that only unconscious incompetent barely human people make, dancing around the group of Israel prisoners as they fire their weapons in the air right next to the Israeli prisoners scaring them to death, and this would be most likely just before they are executed out of camera sight…. So the fact that this woman wanted to show the world how peaceful and humane they handle their prisoners setting an example for the rest of the world on how it should be done, don’t tell me that crap scaring her into saying she did that in poor taste!

And! for the media and news people, reporters, you better smarten up and stop showing anything negative about the Soldiers who are carrying an 80 pound back pack in 120 degrees heat, dieing for you, coming home with missing arms and legs, all so that you can sleep safe at night. So the next time you think you have a great story making our Soldiers look like animals, sit back and think for a moment what sacrifices they give up for you!

This incident brings into view the problems created through facebook and YouTube. Two sites dominated by young people encouraging the display of attention grabbing pictures, videos, and comments. It’s the sorry state of the reality we live in.
