Jasmine Herron, 23, was riding her bike along Atlantic Avenue in Prospect Heights when a parked car door hit her. The impact forced her off of her bike and into the path of a “B-45” bus. The bus hit her and killed her instantly. The driver of the car was charged with driving without a license.

To prevent anything like this from happening again, state Sen. Eric Adams (D – N.Y.) wants all prospective New York drivers to take a course on bike safety before they are handed a license.

Perhaps Sen. Adams would want to expand his bill and have bike riders licenced. They should also have to pass a test on safety and their responsibility as a vehicle on public roads

for #1 , as usual facts are missing.
that being said, how much legislation is needed. you can’t cover everything. It sounds like a freak accident–also known as hashgocho protis.

I guess the person that opened the card door wasn’t even the driver of the car. They needed to charge someone, so they came up with this idea… Weird….

Let me get this straight state Sen. Eric Adams (D – N.Y.) wants all prospective New York drivers to take a course on bike safety before they are handed a license. So if some1 is gonna drive a bike without trying to get a drivers license he dosent need to know bike safety?!?!?!?!?
What about all those bikers passing School Buses when their red flashers are on endangering kids with this??? Y shouldn’t bikers have to obey all traffic rules just like a car? Maybe they have to but in fact they don’t! & nobody does anything about this!!!

I guess a Kollelfaker wouldn’t be able to understand that most drivers in Brooklyn have no respect for bikers and don’t know how to drive to avoid accidents when bikers are involved. Bikers show great respect for the rest of us by taking their cars off the roads and contribute to less traffic and pollution. The least the rest of us can do is to make it as safe as possible for them. All drivers should be required by the DMV to take a special “refresher” course on safe driving fundamentals around bikers as a condition of keeping their licenses.

Eventually everyone will wake up on how many accidents these bikes have and cause. For every door that opens from a parked car you have numerous children running back in middle of crossing a street, because a bike is zooming through a red light. It is a rachmonus at bikes who are thrown in front of buses, but how many children have had close calls because of these bikes?

Giving a ticket for a parked car because “before” he parked, he drove without a license, is called revenge. I don’t mind him getting a ticket but something is rotten in Denmark. Stop these bikes before it’s too late.

how about taking a course on bringing your stupid license when you drive?

#5 , you spotted the same problem that I did. The proposed legislation would not have helped in this case, because the car’s driver did not even bother obtaining a driver’s license.

Perhaps a better law would be that someone who is caught driving a car without a license is heavily fined or incarcerated.

Please explain where respect comes into this picture! I respect the bikers but not their bikes? you want me to stand up and salute the bikes? or you just want me to respect you when you do anything stupid on your bike (as from ur insane comments you sound like one). The term respect would make sense if a african american were using it in this case. for them everything is about respect, al sharpton demands respect and from there anything that happens is respect related. your mama is not mechanech you, you deserve respect. you respectfully steal a car…. v’hamevin yuvin.

This sounds like a freak accident. But let’s talk about bike safety, shall we?…let’s start by having the police enforce the laws and stop bicycle riding on the sidewalk (for everyone over the age of 10). Just today some old bat was tooling down the sidewalk weaving in and out of pedestrians, expecting the pedestrians to jump out of HER way.

“Bikers show great respect for the rest of us” by careening down child filled sidewalks and ignoring traffic rules. Ban bicycles. Long live the crazy glue tzadik in Williamsburg!

I respect the bikers input in preventing pollution and traffic, but NOT on my kid’s expense. Just this morning a biker sped by as my son was boarding his bus. This is contantly happening. I have yet to see a biker being ticketed for violating traffic rules.
What can we as concerned parents do about this???
