Jerusalem – A 22-year-old woman from the haredi town of Betar died on Monday morning at Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem’s Ein Kerem within hours of giving birth to healthy twins.

The woman, for whom it was a first delivery, suffered from pre-eclampsia, a medical condition of pregnancy-induced hypertension with significant amounts of protein in the urine that can be caused by many factors. It is the most common among the dangerous complications of pregnancy.

She was thus kept under observation and underwent delivery by cesarean section. There is no known cure in such cases except for Caesarean section or induction of labor (and therefore delivery of the placenta).

The Jerusalem Post learned that on hand were a number of senior medical specialists in the intensive care unit when her condition deteriorated after the surgery. No internal bleeding in the abdomen or brain was found. Despite efforts to resuscitate her, she died.

As the woman was from a haredi family, it appeared there was little chance they will agree to an autopsy that would determine the cause of death. The Hadassah Medical Organization reported the tragedy to the Health Ministry, which will set up an investigatory team. The HMO said it did everything it could and expressed its deep condolences to her husband and family.

Its so heartbreaking this story. In time that for the Parents it should of be 1 of the most happiest days in their lives it turned around for the Father the most saddest day in his life & for the Mother she didn’t even get a chance to have this day in her life… She died before even knowing what means having Children…….
And let’s not forget about those 2 Babies, from day 1 of their lives they have no Mother to give them a warm smile… Who will raise them!!!??? Who will care for them!!!??? Who will listen to them when they will come home from Cheider crying that some1 hurt them!!!??? So sad!!!! So sad!!!!!

Bucherel, you are a compassionate soul and will make some lucky girl a good husband. For reasons we can’t fathom, Hashem chose to take the mother away from these children. Hopefully they will know love and tender care by another good woman and their father will find nechama in much yiddishe nachas with a second aishes chayil at his side.

Terrible story.

for all women:

The need for prenatal visits and care cannot be overly emphasized.

The treatment for pre-eclampsia and (eclampsia) is prompt delivery of the baby. Although, often times labor can be augmented with oxytocin (pitocin), to accelarate the birth, sometimes the hypertension, coagulopathy (clotting disorder), neurologic disturbances etc. begin to manifest and the only recourse is a cesarean section.

People need to get over their hang ups about C-sections. Sometimes it could be life saving, both for the mother and baby. Moreover, sometimes a c-section may not be absolutely necessary, but advised because of non reassuring fetal tracing.

BDE. Unfortunately we will never know what happened b/c there will be no autopsy. In North America an autopsy would be mandatory. It won’t change anything but knowing why can sometimes be of some comfort to the family.

autopsies are absolutely not mandatory in these cases in north america and most states with large Jewish communities have organizations such as agudah who will advocate for “virtual” autopsies. Most cases such as these an autopsy is not necessary as the cod (cause of death) is pretty apparent just from the medical history being kept. Autopsies in these cases usually happen only if a family requests it so they can prove if a hospital or doctor is liable in negligence

Nothing is more tragic in life than when a mother dies during labor. These twins will never get the chance to remember their mother’s face, touch, and voice. They will always have a permanent sense of guilt that they were the cause of her death. I hope the babies have a caring father and grandparents to raise them.

The rabbis should allow an autopsy because from every such a case, doctors learn something new and useful. It could save future mothers with similar problems.

As someone who suffered from a similar problem but BH was lucky to survive it, I want to make 2 points
1. People do not realize the risks inherent in having twins
2. Pre-eclampsia can occur even after birth and it is hard to control. The only thing that helps is delivery and then a course of mag sulfite and maybe anti seizure meds. Doctors play a tightrope between getting the babies to term and having them out in time so that the mother’s health is not endangered.

Also it is very unlikely that an autopsy would be performed if this happened in a NYC hospital to a frum patient.

All I can say is Boruch Dayan Haemes
I feel so bad for the family, what should be the greatest joy is now the greatest sorrow.

don’t we realize that by having an autopsy to determine exactly what went wrong,we can subsequently save many many future young lives, why this irrational opposition to something that is absolutely allowed according to HALACHA,as we now that PIKUACH NEFESH is DOCHE KOL HATORAH ,
we are behaving like the person, who will not save a drowning woman, because he does not want to look at an udressed woman, and whom CHAZAL call a CHOSID SHOITEH.

in NYS autopsy is mandatory:
#1 homicide
#2 public health hazard

I never heard the “Aguda” does/ did anything 2 prevent autopsy’s,
if anyone its was R’ Gluck that got the Laws passed.
& B”H we have CHESED SHEL EMES & MISASKIM to help all Family’s in time of need!

In many jurisdictions an autopsy is mandatory for all deaths in the operating room, if the patient has been in the hospital for less than 24 hours or if the patient had been discharged within 24 hours. Occasionally the medical officer has the power to waive the autopsy but in many cases, the law prevails. Occasionally religious authorites can influence the medical examiner’s decision. When I was a hospital supervisor I often dealt with medical examiner. One of them always asked if the patient was Jewish but most didn’t care – smallish community here. The one thing that all of them did do was to fast track the post mortems of Jewish patients so that the funeral could be held as quickly as possible.

Pre-eclampsia is the cause of her death rm”l. Descecrating her meis (G-d forbid) has no purpose. let her be at rest, and Hashem should comfort the mourners of Tzion and Yerushalayim.

My neighbor was complaining of headaches the last week of her prenancy. She also gained a lot of weight that week. She told her Dr about it and he kept saying its nothing. Take Tylenol. Well, thay night she had convulsions due to eclampsia. If the patient complains of headaches for 2 days, you dont tell her to take Tylenol! She had a C Section that night, was on a reperator for 2 days. Bh she is ok, but the scare could’ve been avoided.
