“Mr Netanyahu has ordered the security services to prevent the Palestinian Authority from organising events or ceremonies within the Jerusalem municipal area,” his office said.

Israel’s Haaretz newspaper reported that Fayyad had intended to attend a school opening in the Dahayat al-Salam neighbourhood of Jerusalem on Tuesday but that police had sealed the premises.

Contacted by AFP, Ghassan Khatib, an aide to Fayyad, indicated that he still planned to proceed with the ceremony despite the Israeli measures.

Israel’s right-leaning government insists that the whole of Jerusalem is the country’s “eternal, indivisible capital.” The Palestinians claim the city’s eastern sector as the capital of their promised state.

The city’s future is one of the most intractable issues of the Middle East conflict.

Since when did HaAretz bequeath the title PM to the chairman of the PA?

Were they granted a State when I was napping, and I didn’t hear about it?
