“The snow fell over an area of about 1,500 square meters” Emergency Situations Ministry spokesman Viktor Beltsov said.
People living within the zone have been warned against melting the snow down to obtain water, and advised to avoid stepping on it wherever possible, he said.

Experts of the ministry and the Sanitary Control Agency are currently testing snow samples to identify the reason, and the test results are expected to be released Friday, Beltsov said.
A panel of ministry officials have gathered for an emergency session to discuss measures to remove the potentially hazardous matter, he said.

Russia to analyse yellow-orange snow in Siberia
    Thu 1 Feb 2007 19:00:35 GMT
MOSCOW, Feb 1 (Reuters) – Russia’s Emergency Ministry planned to fly a chemical laboratory on Thursday to the Omsk region in southern Siberia to analyse oily yellow and orange snow which has covered an area home to 27,000 people.

“A special mobile chemical laboratory will enable us to carry out express analysis of the snow at the site,” Viktor Beltsov, a spokesman for the ministry, said.

The snow covered a 1,500 sq km area with 7,280 homes, Beltsov said.

Omsk is a heavily industrial city with a number of oil and gas refineries.
