After initially showing the car to the perpetrator, Valsyl Lazoryshyn unexpectedly jumped into the driver’s seat and sped off with the victim’s car. After notifying the NYPD, the victim quickly enlisted the aid of Shomrim, an Orthodox Jewish anti-crime patrol, who helped him turn the tables on the thief. Later that evening, the young man was browsing on Craigslist and found for sale an almost identical 2005 Nissan Maxima but with higher mileage.

Continuing his investigation, he called the number listed and immediately recognized the voice on the other end of the phone. Shomrim advised him to set up a sting operation in which he persuaded the perpetrator that he is interested in meeting up and purchasing the vehicle. The event unfolded January 2nd at a gas station on 18th Avenue in Borough Park. Once the young man saw Lazoryshyn pull up with his vehicle Shomrim called the police and had the man arrested. Councilman Nelson invited the young man to his District Office and honored him with an official New York City Council citation for his bravery.

“The sting operation performed by this young man extremely daring and effective in apprehending the criminal and bringing him to justice,” said Councilman Nelson. “It is great to know that there are community residents and organizations out there that take care of each other and take thugs like Mr. Lazoryshyn off the streets.

Note: The local resident asked to remain anonymous to the public.

we should demand that the nypd officers undergo training by Shomrim.
in this case the police weren’t able (or willing) to help but thanks to shomrim the story has a happy ending

Umm, Why didn’t the councilman check out the story first ?

“Lazoryshyn, 24, was arraigned last night in Brooklyn Criminal Court, where felony charges were downgraded to petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property, both misdemeanors. He was released after posting $500 bail”

Yes our resident did great detective work but the city is the one letting the thug back on the streets.

And why isn’t Councileman Nelson making a big deal about the fact that the alleged criminal was charged with a misdemeanor and released on 500$ bail.
