Brendon Lee O’Connell, 39, of Perth, was convicted under the state’s racial vilification laws, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. said Monday.
O’Connell was found guilty of six offenses. He posted a video on YouTube showing him verbally abusing a young Jewish man in 2009.
Members of the Jewish community attended the sentencing .
“This time it was the Jewish people that were the target, next time it could be Muslims, Asians or any other group,” said Steve Lieblich, a member of the Australia-Israel and Jewish Affairs Council. “So we should be pleased that we’ve had this result and this signal has been sent to Mr. O’Connell and his supporters.”
