Jeannie Kraph, 60, has been in housing court for the past six months, battling an eviction notice that claims her rent-controlled apartment is a health and fire hazard.
But she and her lawyer say the allegations are a ruse to raise the rent to $1,500, the amount that her landlord charges other tenants at the North 9th Street building, which is a mix of rental and co-op units.
Kraph’s landlord, Hal Einhorn, and the cooperative that owns her building, 107-109-111 North 9th Street Associates, said that money is not an issue, despite the apartment’s prime location in one of the priciest sections of Brooklyn. [amnewyork]
