The City Council voted 38-12 on Wednesday to rename the Queensboro Bridge after Mr. Koch, who led New York from 1977 to 1989 and emerged as one of its most familiar faces. Next month, the city is expected to officially christen the bridge the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge, or E.K.Q.B. for short.
The bridge was made famous in the Simon & Garfunkel song The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy). Mayor Michael Bloomberg suggested the name change in December, and the City Council approved the proposal today.
Koch, now 86, has said via Twitter that he never imagined such an honor. He was the 105th mayor and served from 1978 through 1989.
The bridge connects Manhattan to Queens and was completed in the early 1900s.
Look, he was a public servant with a distinguished career.
I think the people should decide whether to change the name or not. I don’t think the RFK bridge was an appropriate name change to the williamsburg bridge.
The cynic in me thinks Bloomberg wants some monument in his name…eventually
The queens residents felt very hurt that the bridge will be renamed so the briliant minds in the city council came up with this brainstorm idea to rename it to “Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge”. Tomorrow the 59 st residents will wake up and complain why their street is no longer included in the name so we’ll probably end up with “Ed Koch Queensboro 59 street Bridge”
Has someone told S&G? Somehow, I don’t think the song goes with er, um, er Eddie.
I don’t think that New York International Airport (a/k/a Idlewild Airport), should have been renamed John F. Kennedy International Airport, in 1963. JFK was from Boston, and Logan Airport in Boston, should have been renamed Kennedy Airport.
I dislike that they are taking away the descriptive names of places.
I liked that I knew that the Williamsburg bridge took me to Williamsburg in Brooklyn. The same for finding the 59th street Bridge. The Triboro let me know where we were heading.
Why are we deliberately going out of our way to make the city more confusing? The beauty of NYC is the square blocks with numbered blocks and clear addresses that are easy to navigate.
And the previous poster is correct… isnt this a real waste of money??????
