Brooklyn, NY – Congressman Edolphus “Ed” Towns and Congressman Anthony D. Weiner announced today an effort by the entire New York congressional delegation to ensure that observant Jews are able to take the New York bar exam under equitable conditions. The New York bar exam is scheduled for July 25, 2007, the same date as Tisha B’Av, one of the most solemn days on the Jewish calendar.

Although the New York State Board of Law Examiners is offering the exam on July 26, 2007 for examinees observing Tisha B’Av, examinees on that date are not allowed to take the exam on their laptop computers. Congressman Towns and Congressman Weiner have jointly written a letter to the Board of Law Examiners requesting the board to allow observant examinees to write the exam on their laptop computers. This letter has been signed by the entire New York congressional delegation. [Ed Towns Office]

“While the Board hopes to be able to accommodate all applicants who request permission to use their laptop for the essay section of the July 2007 bar examination, if demand exceeds the number of available laptop seats, participants will be selected by lottery.” http://www.nybarexam.org/pc_program_707.htm.
This is the for the regular test takers. So, no, to the prior post.

Due to the logistics and resources involved with administering the laptop program, the Board is unable to offer to applicants requiring the Tisha B’av accommodation, the option of using their laptop computer on Thursday, July 26 for the essay section of the bar examination. Therefore, all applicants requiring the Tisha B’av accommodation will not be able to participate in the laptop program and will be required to hand-write their essay answers.

Weren’t only like 200 people allowed to use the laptops as part of a pilot program?

I applaud Congressman Weiner and Towns. They are looking out for the inequities that are taking place. Why should it be that frum jews must hand-write their exam when everyone else taking the test may type their answers. And for those that do not think writing your answers is that big of deal (as the earlier posting about dirtying your hands claims), I say, try writing for 6.5 hours. Especially since most law students have been typing their answers on every school exam. Weiner and Towns, a great big thank you from all the Orthodox Jewish law students taking the bar this summer.

Let’s just hope there is not a repeat of the chillul hashem that ensued in June, 2004, when similar accommodations were made for tisha b’av, and the ‘frum’ test-takers showed up to the exam boasting about how they had called people who took the test on the original date and knew every question that would be asked.
