FILEColumbia, SC – Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann called on President Barack Obama Tuesday to apologize to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for an unflattering exchange caught on an open microphone at a summit in France last week.

In the conversation reporters heard, French President Nicolas Sarkozy says he can’t stand Netanyahu and calls him a liar. Obama responds, through a French interpreter: “You are sick of him, but I have to work with him every day.”

Bachmann told reporters Obama needs to apologize to America’s closest ally in the Middle East.

“I call on President Obama to immediately apologize to Prime Minister Netanyahu and I also believe that the president should demonstrate leadership and demand that the French President Sarkozy do the same,” Bachmann said.

White House spokesman Jay Carney had no comment on the conversation.

Bachmann said that Obama is putting too much space between the U.S. and Israel. “And now president Obama has put Israel further at risk by allowing Iran the time Iran needed to get closer to obtaining nuclear weapons,” Bachman said. She cited a report Tuesday from the U.N.’s International Atomic Energy Agency that says Iran is secretly acquiring know-how and gear needed to create nuclear weapons and preparing for tests.

She’s sharply critical of Obama and U.S. plans to exit Iraq noting in particular the influence Iran will gain. “We’ll have fewer troops in Iraq than we have in Honduras — and that is despite spending 4,400 American lives and $805 billion,” Bachmann said.

“The president’s made some tragic errors in his foreign policy,” Bachmann said.

Bachmann plans to make a foreign policy speech on Thursday in Charleston ahead of debate in Spartanburg on Saturday that will emphasize that topic.

The Minnesota congresswoman is trying to re-ignite her campaign in early-voting South Carolina and regain the tea party supporters she lost to Herman Cain and a Mitt Romney. Earlier Tuesday she again took issue with a tax break for the nation’s low-income workers she now wants eliminated, saying former President Ronald Reagan made a mistake when he pushed for Congress to pass the law.

She’s competing against a raft of tax proposals: Romney’s proposal not to tax dividends, interest or capital gains for people with adjusted gross income below $200,000; Cain’s catchy 9-9-9 plan and Rick Perry’s 20 percent tax on post card idea.

Bachmann told reporters that every person needs to pay and sacrifice to get the country on back on its feet. “People who make more should be paying more and I believe that people who are at the upper end of the income stream need to be paying more,” Bachmann said, adding that the highest income people already do that.

Another campaign tactic. She nebech thinks jews will love her for this. What she doesn’t know is that jews also believe that netanyahu is a lier. For the same reason there’s no reason Obama should apologize to Israel. If anything it should be to Bibi but not to israelies, which 90% of them think about Bibi just as Obama said it.

    *smacking my forhead*

I knew it was just a matter of time before the GOP candidates would use this “incident” (if you even want to call it that), as an excuse to make a stink & to score votes. Unbelievable! >[:-P

Michelle Bachmann hasn’t cared two bits about Israel… UNTIL NOW! So I wish she’d just keep her trap shut!

I don’t like people using a VERY complicated matter such as Israel, and the Israeli\Palestinian conflict, etc, as way to make elections shift over HERE. The two have nothing to do with each other, and I’m sick to death of people accusing our President of hating Jews, hating Israel, hating Netanyahu, (which he never said), and everything else!

    It’s getting OLD!

Again the comments will knock Bachmann and defend the President. The Jewish mantality of defending those who offend and bash thoe who support is absolutely pathetic. The nations don’t like u OR bibi because ur Jewish and it will take any form of name calling- and they won’t love u any better because u were “honest”- its simple- thanks Bachmann for ur support – and the President should apologize – quite frankly his actions are just as bad as his words so they corroborate that HE IS anti Israel!

this is the strongest and most clear (and only) foreign policy statement Bachman is capable of.
When you’re a few months in, and have zero traction, its time to stop spending other peoples money needlessly
Ditto for Perry, Hunstman, et al
Not for Cain, who is desperately needed forr his entertainment value.
    Hang in there, Herm baby

Seriously…. what is the big stink here?!?! I don’t get it!!! The FRENCH President made the rude remark! Not Obama!

What did Obama say that was so terrible?!?! He said “YOU [the french Prez] may hate him…but I must work with him every day.”

Well… that’s the truth isnt it? Wasn’t he basically saying “Yes, I’m not fond of him myself, but it is what it is. I must work alongside him regardless.”

And is that not an ADULT way to deal with the situation?! President Obama didn’t call him a “liar” or anything else! So calm down! (lol) Jeesh!

Not to mention… Bibi DOES lie a lot sometimes! He says he won’t expand the settlements… and then he does. He says he’ll go “tough” on terrorists… but then he releases over 1,000 of the WORST ones, just to save one soldier! He’s put his own people at risk w\his nonsense. To say Bibi is ALWAYS truthful… isn’t reality!

Not to mention… if you ask me: our President does a MUCH better job dealing w\terrorists than Bibi apparently does! What’s Bibi done for Israel to help keep it safe, that can compare to what President Obama has done for us over here?! Getting rid of some of the WORST terrorists in our current history!

    Obama 2012!!!

I thought Bachman was running for president of the USA, not for the Knesset. It is very sad how we have leaders whose primary loyalty is to the State of Israel instead of the United States.

Bachmann is a recidivist. Her tactics are like a cat that gets its tail stuck in a doorway and works hard enough to free it and cuts off its own tail.

I am tired of Bachmann constantly stating “I worked on a Kibbutz in 1974”. Who cares? Incidentally, what did Obama state about Netanyahu that he has to apologize for? It is a known fact that Obama and Netanyahu can’t stand each other, so what else is new??

Obama was in the middle of trying to get Sarkozy to support Israel so you can’t call Obama anti-Israel on this. Anti Netanyahu yes, but that ‘s personal, not anti-Israel!
(I’m trying to champion Hussein Obama, but this incident is a non-incident.)
