While I feel terribly sorry for this woman, I have been saying for years that it is a real miracle that there aren’t more car accidents in Williamsburg. On the average day there are literally 100’s of near misses. I have the unfortunate opportunity of regularly driving through the streets, and while I have nothing against the neighborhood or people I am ALWAYS horrified at the way people cross the streets. In middle of the block, against the light, paying no attention to oncoming traffic or stop lights. (Separate issue that this shows a complete lack of derech eretz) This morning I nearly hit a toddler when I was backing up, it boggles my mind that his parent would cross right behind a car that was backing up.
A common occurance. Hashem really watches over this community but I wonder what it would be take for people to start crossing the streets with vigilance

Oh poor woman! And besides the point most of these tlc drivers need their licenses confiscated! Wildest crazy drivers…. One em passed a light on me while I was crossing w/ my stroller! Lucky him his plates had too many characters to report it. Hashem yishmur

lee, taylor is a very dangerous spot to cross the street. many cars make the turn from roebling and taylor when the pedestrians have the right of way.

I couldn’t agree with you more. And I’m NOT a driver.
The street crossing situation in Willi and BP is insane and dangerous.

I wish they would implement a ticketing system and fine pedestrians who cross mid block, or when the light is red.

Actually the intersection of Lee Ave and Taylor is terrible hard to cross. There is traffic coming from different directions and the lights are different for each direction. It is difficult to cross this particular intersection.
This is besides what BaruchHashem writes that we need more derech eretz in crossing – and this is across the board in all neighborhoods.

According to some bystanders it might have been a mini van not explorer. But definitely a non yiddish driver. He stopped looked then just sped off.

A woman dies and people are arguing about who’s fault it was, driving habits, bad pedestrians etc. Yidden, wake up and smell the coffee. Try to be more sensitive on what you are writing. Why are we fighting.

The issue is not whom was at fault, that will be seen later. The issue is that this behema killed someone and drove off. being a TLC makes it easier to catch, I bet one of the local non Jewish bases.

You’re right. i think your license should be revoked. You simply are a danger to society not only by the words that come out of your mouth but by your driving skills. Funny, Most New Yorkers don’t follow the lights and the drivers simply learn to drive with that. You have the audacity; instead of sympathizing with the loss of a yiddish neshama to talk about right or wrong in crossing. You’re a true example of those people that have completely taken hashem out of their lives. This is a gzeira min hashamayim by the hands of an evil man. Just a note Mr. #1 : When you hit someone in williamsburgh, please don’t run cause then it’ll be obvious that your at fault.

To all you lose mouths here. I’m a driver. And I can tell you, when I drive through williamsburgh I tell myself I need to go for a special defensive driving course. You drivers, including #1 ; don’t have a drop of a pischon peh here. I live in geula, yerushalayim now and I drive all the time. With all the J walking and middle of the street crossing; I can’t remember when the last person was hit here. A driver that drives through geula knows it’ll take long and it’ll be a sweaty and patient drive. If he hits someone he’ll be at fault. A mentality can’t be changed and the drivers in geula go with it. Your car is not a vehicle of only you getting to your destination. The trick is to learn the language and minds of pedestrians around you. And in every community it’s different. You guys condemning pedestrians are selfish and irresponsible to even suggest that this woman is at fault or blame pedestrians for it. And by the way, nobody blame Williamsburgh or BP cause the whole New York city is the same with driving. Drive the FDR at night with 16 motorcycles drag racing around you. If you have a problem with pedestrians you gotta get off the roads cause it’s part of driving.

It’s sickening that commentators on this site are always blaming the victims.

Now that the subject of pedestrians has been brought up I have my own input as a driver and this is not chas vsholom anything to do with this particular story.

in general most pedestrians are complete idiots. ever turn a corner and someone darts out from in between cars on a 90 degree angle as your turning into a block?

cars backing up without looking to see if cars are coming or backing into a spot?

Pedestrians do many stupid things. On the same token there are many drivers that are complete idiots and do not drive defensively. just because pedstrians do stupid things does not give a right to a motorist to just do stupid things.

We all know the examples of the bad behaviors of pedestrians and motorists so everyone should correct their own bad habits.

The people that walk in back of a car as it’s backing into a spot are complete morons. Blame drivers all you want. Everyone should have a bit of derech eretz

And mothers should stop using their baby carriages as a buffer between them and the driver going down 60 mph on 13th ave at 2 pm

There’s one point that’s being stated as a fact . That if one flees the scene of an accident, he’s the one at fault. There could be many reasons one would flee and still not be at fault . He might’ve been an illegal immigrant or had a suspended license or perhaps he did not have any insurance but he might still not be at fault

What a sad story. Mrs Uhr was a Auschwitz survivor. She worked in Camp Bnos and in Torah Vodaath for over 50 years. When one of the mosdos she worked for couldn’t afford to pay for milk, she gave her wedding ring as collateral so the children would have what to eat. May her neshomah be maletz Yosher for Klal Yisroel.

I drive through Williamsburg every day to & from work. MOST people wait at the lights, but the biggest culprits for dashing out are the yungermen & young girls…they play “chicken” all the time. I guess they’re in a hurry to get to Kollel or to their teaching jobs. PLEASE… wait for the cars to turn, don’t dash out to beat me! I may not be able to stop in time. And get up earlier if you’re going to be late.

I am so sorry about this tragedy…her poor family. BD”E. #1 , you sound quite heartless.

I don’t know about you, but if I were driving in a neighborhood that I know that the people are lax in the way they cross the street, I’d be extra super careful to look for pedestrians before backing up. It may be inconvenient and frustrating, but I care more about the life of a person, than the 2 extra minutes of my time.

I know that when you were a little satmar chaider yingel they didn’t teach you rules of crossing and honestly pedestrians no nothing about traffic or driving signs. But guess what????? The only people that know, in our communities, what is right and wrong ; cause they learnt it for driving are drivers and you should know that. You really want to change a whole community? If someone like you cannot listen to the truth and sensitivity of the situation ; and your one person, then you really think a WHOLE community will change their minds??? go with the flow and face it. But please don’t hit anybody and run for that matter; just cause you think you’re right. You might regret it. Grow up!!!

By the way, if you look at the picture. It looks as though she was hit at a pedestrian crossing; and #1 , are you drivers right not waiting for a pedestrian to cross too?
