New York, NY – Media organizations sent letters on Monday to city officials complaining about the police handling of journalists covering the Occupy Wall Street protests and called for meetings to address their concerns.

They said New York police blocked journalists from seeing when authorities cleared out the Occupy camp in lower Manhattan’s Zuccotti Park last week and said police officers used force and arrested some journalists as they were trying to do their jobs.

“The police actions of last week have been more hostile to the press than any other event in recent memory,” a coalition of media organizations and journalist groups said in a letter to chief New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne.

The New York Civil Liberties Union sent another letter to Mayor Michael Bloomberg and police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, covering similar ground.

“The numerous reports we have received and have learned of make clear to us that the NYPD is aggressively blocking journalists from doing their constitutionally protected work and in some instances is even targeting journalists for mistreatment,” that letter said.

When police cleared out the Occupy camp in Zuccotti Park last week in an overnight raid, journalists were kept at a distance, and several were arrested along with the protesters there and at other sites later in the day.

Bloomberg, an independent, has defended the NYPD’s policy of keeping the media back, saying it was intended to keep them out of harm’s way.

“The police department routinely keeps members of the press off to the side when they’re in the middle of a police action,” he said last week. “It’s to prevent the situation from getting worse, and it’s to protect the members of the press.”

The media groups, in their letter, cited numerous examples, including an officer grabbing a photographer and dragging him from the park and another pushing a reporter, who fell on the ground. They called for a meeting “so that we may have full and frank discussions in order to resolve these issues and prevent further deterioration of the police-press relationship which is so critical to an informed public.”

The signatories on the letter included representatives of The Associated Press; The New York Times; the New York Post; the Daily News; Dow Jones; Thomson Reuters; NBC Universal and WNBC-TV; WABC-TV; WCBS-TV; the National Press Photographers Association; the New York Press Photographers Association; the New York Press Club; and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.

In an email, Browne, the police spokesman, said, “We’ve worked together in the past to iron out misunderstandings, and I’m happy to do so again.”

The mayor’s office referred comment to the NYPD.

A number of journalist groups announced Monday that a coalition to monitor police-media relations had been created.

“In what appeared to be a planned maneuver, police officers forced reporters and photographers so far away from Zuccotti Park that they could not see what was happening,” the group said. “They roughed up people who were trying to fulfill their duty to report the news.”

It said what the police did on Nov. 15 “to suppress coverage of their activities was intolerable” and it was “determined to use any means needed to fight such censorship in the future.”

Members of the coalition include the Deadline Club, the New York City chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists; the Deadline Club Foundation; the Newspaper Guild of New York; the News Media Guild; the New York Press Club; the New York Press Club Foundation; the Newswomen’s Club of New York; the New York Press Photographers Association; the National Press Photographers Association; and the Society of Silurians.

They mistreated the journalists right along w\the protesters, because they didn’t want video coverage of what they were doing to people! It’s that simple!

It’s also the same reason why they did the raid in the middle of the night! They didn’t want anyone knowing that they marched in there & were destroying people’s personal property, ripping apart & shredding books (!), throwing away people’s clothing, their food, etc.

It’s only going to get worse. The more people speak out about the GROSS income inequality in this country… (400 people, make more money than 150 MILLION of us, combined!)…

The more violent they will become against us in order to stifle our voice!

The one thing they are REALLY afraid of… is if all of the Tea Partiers who *also* hate the banks, the corruption, the greed, etc… end up getting sick & tired of the nonsense as well, and join forces w\the 99%er’s!

There was a Lobbyist memo that went out to Republican members of congress, offering to discredit the movement, make up stories, run ads attacking Dems who supported it, etc… WHY?

Because of the fear, that ALL people, from every walk of life, will join forces! (lol) It’s as simple as that!

I follow the VIN comments from time to time and I can’t help noticing the rants of the poster who caller herself “SherryTheNoahide”. Consistently, this poster spews socialist and communist propaganda. Through history, these movements have hurt our people, costing countless lives and untold misery. I implore posters to pay no heed to these rants. Don’t let the smooth and polished rhetoric beguile you into thinking that there is any content beneath those liberal talking points. Do your own research, and give that poster the collective cold shoulder. These people make a lot of noise but eventually go down in flames. We should just make sure that they don’t take rest of us along with them.

Sherry represents the archetypical well meaning liberal with no understanding of world history. Of course there are problems that need to be fixed. Perhaps laws need to be adjusted regarding taxes, unions, fair housing act, etc. However, to make the leap that the free market is the cause of the problems is utter ignorance. Capitalism is what keeps us a free people. It should never be the government’s job to create a “fair” country in which everyone is equally provided for. Government is there to protect the free market. It’s the job of clergymen and parents to make sure citizens are benevolent and take care of their neighbors in need.

So Sherry, take a break from your incessant commenting and read a book. Any decent world history book would be a good start. Follow that up with Milton Friedman’s Capitalism and Freedom and then maybe we can have an adult conversation.

That’s an occupational hazard of journalists. You get too close to the action, you can be seriously hurt.
